Tulip Time visitors who watched the famed Dutch Dancers were surprised by an unexpected and non-traditional happening. As the Dutch Dance music ended and the dancers began to disperse, more music, a re-mix of Ray Charles by Opiuo (www.opiuo.com), came from the speakers. The dancers then launched into a routine that showed some elements of the traditional klompen dance but, had a very different twist. The dance extended East and West from its 8th Street & Central beginning. Soon, onlookers were moved to follow the 2012 Tulip Time Festival theme and "Join the Dance". Between 150 to 200 participants ventured into the street as the dance performance became a festival flash mob experience. While the new dance may have appeared to be totally spontaneous, considerable planning went into it beginning as early as February. Upward of 100 Dutch Dancers and community members ranging in age from 9 to 70 rehearsed the routine choreographed and directed by Linda Graham, Chair of the Department of Dance at Hope College. Graham has experience in other large community participation dance events such as the June, 2011 Global Water Dance at Tunnel Park in which dancers all over the world performed the same movements at the same time to call attention to the need for safe water everywhere. Graham, along with festival supporter Ken Freestone, was instrumental in getting the project off the drawing board, and with the enthusiastic involvement of the Dutch Dance organization, making it a reality <b>...</b>

How to Plant Tulips and Daffodils
Lowe's teaches you how to plant daffodils and tulips in the fall so you have a beautiful garden in the spring. The most popular spring-flowering plants include: -Tulips, which produce vividly colorful flowers in red, yellow, pink, white, purple, orange, and bicolors. -Daffodils, also called narcissus, are among the spring's earliest bloomers. Most feature a trumpet-shape middle surrounded by frilly petals. Daffodils generally bloom in white or shades of yellow and orange, but they also come in pretty peach. Planting tulip and daffodil bulbs is easy. STEP 1: Dig a hole. The size of the bulb will dictate how deep you should dig the hole. For small bulbs such as these little daffodils, you plant just 2 to 3 inches deep. Larger bulbs, such as these tulips, are planted 5 to 6 inches deep. Just make sure you plant 2-3 times the depth of the bulb and refer to the planting instructions that come with the plant. Add a little compost or fertilizer to the planting hole to give your bulbs a nutrient boost. STEP 2: Set the bulb root side down in the soil. Bulbs have a top and bottom. The bottom usually has a little ruffle of dried roots. The top is generally more pointed. STEP 3: If you want a mass of color in your garden, plant bulbs close together. And plant lots. It's not unusual to plant 100 bulbs in a small area. If you want little clumps of bulbs in your garden or landscape, plant them in groups of 6 to 12 bulbs. STEP 4: Cover the bulbs with soil. Water well. Then add a 2 to 3 <b>...</b>

Ten Days of Tulips - Time-lapse
I filmed these three tulips growing over a period of ten days. Each picture was taken every fifteen minutes most of the time. Some of the time it was slowed to every 20 minutes when the bright overhead grow light was turned off. I then played them back at 30 frames per second. I used a Canon PowerShot S3 IS and GBTimelapse software. I also made the music using Sony Acid Music Studio. A larger crisper Quicktime version can be seen here: www.webiocosm.com

At first glance, it looks like a giant child armed with a box of crayons has been set loose upon the landscape. Vivid stripes of purple, yellow, red, pink, orange and green make up a glorious Technicolor patchwork. Yet far from being a child's sketchbook, this is, in fact, the northern Netherlandsin the middle of the tulip season. With more than 10000 hectares devoted to the cultivation of these delicate flowers, the Dutch landscape in May is a kaleidoscope of giddy colors as the tulips burst into life. The bulbs were planted in late October and early November, and these colorful creations are now ready to be picked and sold as bunches of cut flowers in florists and supermarkets. More than three billion tulips are grown each year and two-thirds of the vibrant blooms are exported, mostly to the USand Germany. Their dazzling colors are thanks to the years in the 17th century when Tulip mania swept the globe and the most eye-catching specimens changed hands for a small fortune. But like a rainbow, this colorful landscape is a short-lived phenomenon. When the flowers are gone, the land will be cultivated for a rather more mundane crop of vegetables.
