Newark freight driver pursues trucking greatness at New Jersey Truck Driving Championships

As a kid, Wilbert Vano cruised around his living room in an imaginary truck, using a basketball as a gear shift. Decades later, Vano, 34, of the Colonia section of Woodbridge, has turned his childhood adventures into local fame as a five-time champion at at the New Jersey Motor Truck Association's Truck Driving Championships. The annual event, held this year at the Doubletree Hotel in Somerset, celebrates truck driving prowess on a competitive course -- from maneuvering a hulking tanker into a dock, to making tight turns and stopping just short of a railroad track. Vano, a driver with Con-way Freight in Newark, is relentless in his pursuit of trucking greatness, practicing on weekends and studying on his down-time. Drivers must be accident free for the year to compete and winners of each truck division in the state competition will travel to Orlando, Fla. next month for the American Trucking Association National Truck Driving Championships. Immigration judge grants reprieve for Princeton same-sex couple facing deportation

Citing a clear shift in the federal government's stance on the 1996 Defense of Marriage act and how it affects same-sex binational couples, an immigration judge in Newark today delayed the deportation of a gay Venezualan man fighting to remain in the country on the basis of his marriage to his American spouse. Henry Velandia married his husband, Josh Vandiver, in Connecticut last year, but because of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which makes the law blind to same-sex unions, Vandiver cannot sponsor his husband for a visa. As recently as two days ago, Judge Alberto Riefkohl and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief counsel continued to deny requests by the couple's lawyer to delay the hearing. But yesterday, US Attorney General Eric Holder sent a strong message when he vacated a judge's decision in a similar case, also in New Jersey, and Riefkohl granted Velandia's petition. The hearing was pushed back to December of this year. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)

North Haledon couple offer second chance for sick and abused dogs

The inner city animal shelters Michael Pravec and his wife, Stacey, frequent have no sign and locked doors. These aren't places animals come to get adopted. It's where they go to die. They can't save them all, so the North Haledon couple look for the worst cases — the ill or abused dogs that are hopelessly hard to find homes for. With the help of donations and a word-of-mouth network of foster homes, animal shelters, veterinarians, and trainers, the dogs are nursed back to health, trained and placed in permanent homes. The emotionally wrenching work has consumed their lives and led to the founding of their own non-profit, Special Needs K9. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)

High school athletes tackle sports concussions

High school athletes risk serious long-term brain damage when they ignore the symptoms of a concussion, but many young athletes do just that. From the tough-it-out culture of sports to the desire not to let ones team down in a pinch, high school athletes are often tempted to keep symptoms like persistent headaches, blurry vision and light sensitivity to themselves. As the captain of the West Morris Central football team in 2006, Kevin Saum kept his blinding headaches a secret from his coach and trainer and ended up having emergency brain surgery. Though he dreamed of playing college football, Saum, now a student at Rutgers University, will never play contact sports again. And while most people think of sports like football and ice hockey when they think of concussions, one of the most dangerous sports is cheerleading. The West Milford High School cheerleading team has had two serious concussions in the last year and many more minor ones. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)

Women over 60 compete in the Miss New Jersey Senior America pageant in Atlantic City

It was no guts, no glory for thirteen 60-somethings when they took the stage at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City yesterday for the annual Miss New Jersey Senior America Pageant. For decades, the Miss Senior America pageant has celebrated women who've reached the "age of elegance." Women around the country compete for a title that honors their philosophy of life and inner beauty -- but with glittering dresses and risque performances, there's a lot of attention to outer beauty as well. Desiree Nigrelli, a former professional singer from Atlantic City, took the 2011 title with her two grandchildren in the audience. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)

Preserving Miss Belvedere

Dwight Foster of Ultra One is on a mission to preserve Miss Belvedere, a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere that was buried in a time capsule for Tulsa, Oklahoma's 50 anniversary in 1957. When the capsule was opened last year, instead of a shiny '57 Belvedere, they found a car covered with rust because the concrete vault had leaked. With a little patience, and rust remover, Foster is going to preserve the car for the future.

How landfills are built and operated

According to the EPA, the average American produces about four pounds of garbage per day. That's around three quarters of a ton over the course of a year. The trash that doesn't get composted or recycled inevitably ends up in a landfill. At modern facilities such as the Middlesex County landfill in East Brunswick, massive underground liner systems are built to capture leachate to help eliminate the potential impact to the environment. Methane gas which is produced during the decomposition of trash, is captured and reused to create electricity at the County's Wastewater Treatment Plant. (Video by Andre Malok / The Star-Ledger)
