Newark freight driver pursues trucking greatness at New Jersey Truck Driving Championships

As a kid, Wilbert Vano cruised around his living room in an imaginary truck, using a basketball as a gear shift. Decades later, Vano, 34, of the Colonia section of Woodbridge, has turned his childhood adventures into local fame as a five-time champion at at the New Jersey Motor Truck Association's Truck Driving Championships. The annual event, held this year at the Doubletree Hotel in Somerset, celebrates truck driving prowess on a competitive course -- from maneuvering a hulking tanker into a dock, to making tight turns and stopping just short of a railroad track. Vano, a driver with Con-way Freight in Newark, is relentless in his pursuit of trucking greatness, practicing on weekends and studying on his down-time. Drivers must be accident free for the year to compete and winners of each truck division in the state competition will travel to Orlando, Fla. next month for the American Trucking Association National Truck Driving Championships.
