Ruben's Tube

The classic physics experiment involving sound, a tube of propane and fire. Created for Flash Forward 2006, but useful in any case where you are not allowed to have fire. I push through the tube 449 Hz then higher frequencies, then some jazz and then some rock. This is real life sound visualization.

Flame Table 2 -- Jared Ficklin

A Flame Table is an apparatus created by Dr. Harold Daw in 1984 for showing the eigen modes in fire. This is my version created to demonstrate sound visualization using fire. I am playing the song Slurpy, by Geoff Farina off of his album Blobscape. This song has plenty of pure tones at the resonant frequencies for this table. So during the song some of the eigen modes are expressed. So it sounds and looks great! I created this to show as part of a presentation for sound visualization. non-newtonian fluid on a speaker

The properties of corn starch and water are really cool when you add the energy of a sine frequency going through a speaker. It seemingly defies gravity in an organic almost living way. This video was created for FITC in Toronto by Jared Ficklin. It is an easy experiment, getting the consistency right can take some time and also it may destroy your speaker. Enjoy!

Harold Daw Flame Box by Jared Ficklin

A Flame Box is a physics apparatus published by Harold Daw. It is like a Ruben's Tube except rather than sound in a line, it is sound in a plane. The effect is more subtle, but surprising in their nuance. I built my own Flame Box to show the resonant modes of sound as part of a conference presentation called Seeing Sound, in Nature and Code. Kinect Hack Ruben's Tube Theremin by Jared Ficklin

Just playing around with science. Hooked up my 10' Ruben's Tube to a Kinect then with help from Andre Michelle and tonfall (www.andre-michelle.com ) I worked up a Kinect Hack Theremin to have a more physical way to generate sine curves. Also thank you to the openFrameworks.cc community. Always much inpiration there. Here I am serving up the depth and center of mass data to an AIR app via sockets so I can use tonfall to produce the audio. Enjoy!

My Excercise in Too Much Information. Hello World to my Augmented Reality Porta Potty using Phidgets, Adobe Air & an ultra-short throw projector. I am creating this in hopes of using them at a frog design party if I can work out the bugs.

Stephen Hawking's Universe by Jared Ficklin

This is a draft of an interactive art project I have been working on that is both a tribute to Stephen Hawking and a form of digital Sound Visualization. The idea is algorithmically generated stars, one per sentence, placed by the amplitude and frequency of the Hawking's computer generated voice from the entirety of the Cambridge Lectures. This video was created to share the project with eye magazine. I hope to keep working on this. If this interests you visit www.jaredficklin.com. I hope you enjoy! -- jared ficklin

Ruben's Tube and Mapped Projection

An installation for the Thirteen23 SXSW party in 2010. Including a Ruben's Tube and a Sound Visualization using mapped projection on a brick wall. Fun night of fire physics and code.

Pecha Kucha Austin, Skate Park Design by Jared Ficklin

This is my 20 slides 20 seconds a slide on Skate Park Design. There is a good combination of skate culture, skate history and the impact on design. It is fast and loose and fun! I was invited to present in part because of my role as the Co-Director of the Austin Public Skatepark Action Committee. I apologize for the poor quality. I just set my camera on the speaker and it wasn't some nice flip cam.

Geekiest Concert Lighter in the World

I created this miniture Ruben's Tube because I felt that regular concert lighters were not energetic enough. This one actually shows the waveform of the music playing. It is designed to run off of a concert lighter. Follow me on Twitter @jaredrawk

The Stephen Hawking's Universe section from Flash on The Beach by Jared Ficklin

This is an excerpt from my September 9th 2009 session at Flash on The Beach in Brighton UK. The clip shows the current draft of an interactive art piece titled Stephen Hawking's Universe. It is a form of sound visualzation paying tribute to Stephen Hawking. Great thanks to John for booking me and everyone who attended the session. Many people requested I post this, so here you go. Large Registered Sound Visualization

This is a hello world of a large registered projection sound visualization onto the Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin, TX. Essentially it turns the unique architecture in to a building sized equalizer graphic. It was a test run for the SXSW Interactive Opening party. Hope you enjoy!
