Tiffany Shlain's UC Berkeley Keynote Commencement Speech

UC Berkeley's 2010 Commencement speech calls for Moxie. Honored by Newsweek as one of the "Women Shaping the 21st Century," Tiffany Shlain is an acclaimed filmmaker, artist, founder of The Webby Awards, co-founder of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and a Henry Crown Fellow of The Aspen Institute. Few people could appreciate the use of tweets and text messages more than keynote speaker Tiffany Shlain who addressed a sold-out audience of 11500 people. Shlain noted that the World Wide Web was in its infancy when she graduated from UC Berkeley in 1992. Director Shlain urged graduates to take risks and tackle challenges in life with "moxie -- a mixture of being bold, fearless and a little outrageous," and recounted times in her career when she was able to get doors to open for her with such an approach. Sunday marked the first time that Commencement Convocation was held at the 11500-seat Haas Pavilion. The event, traditionally held at the Greek Theatre, which seats 7200, was relocated to accommodate a greater demand for tickets. 'I Am Offended!' - Richard Dawkins @ UC Berkeley

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com 'I Am Offended!' - Richard Dawkins @ UC Berkeley. --- Subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com ---Richard Dawkins is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science author. He was formerly Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He was voted Britain's leading public intellectual by readers of Prospect magazine and was named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" for 2007. Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term "meme". He is a prominent critic of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book "The Blind Watchmaker", he argued against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he described evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. He has since written several popular science books, and makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing these topics. Richard Dawkins is an atheist, secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist, and supporter of the Brights movement. In his 2006 book "The God Delusion", he contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that faith qualifies as a delusion − as a fixed false belief. • www.richarddawkins.net • http ...

University of California, Berkeley Racist Bake Sale

Here's the link www.youtube.com A Republican group at the University of California, Berkeley has cooked up controversy with a plan to hold an "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" as a way to oppose legislation that would allow public colleges to consider race in student admissions. (Sept. 26)test against an Affirmative Action-like bill awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown's signature, UC Berkeley College Republicans announced plans to host a satirical Increase Diversity Bake Sale, selling racially price-adjusted pastries on campus, SFGate reported. The bake sale is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10am. The announcement, posted on the group's Facebook page, advertised a pricing structure, ranging from $2 per pastry for white men to $.25 per pastry for Native Americans, with a $.25 price break for women. "Just like the CA Senate Bills 185 and 387 the phone bank supports, we will be considering race, gender, ethnicity, national/geographic origin and other relevant factors to ensure the equitable distribution of baked goods to our diverse student body," read the announcement. The post finished with a signoff: "Hope to see you all there! If you don't come, you're a racist!" In another post, the group explained that the bake sale is meant to be satirical. But many students were not amused. "I'm ashamed to know that I go to the same school with people who would say stuff like this," said student Skyler Hogan-Van Sickle in a Facebook. "I'm really trying to figure out how someone can be this ...

Graduating senior Austin Whitney wears a robotic exoskeleton developed by campus engineers as he walks on stage to receive his Cal degree. Austin was instantly paralyzed in 2007 when a car accident severed his spinal cord. Also appearing in the video is UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau (blue robe) and Professor Homayoon Kazerooni (black robe). Austin's walk has been in the works since last fall, when he connected with Professor Kazerooni and his team of researchers. "This technology can be accessible to a large number of people, and that is our mission," said Kazerooni. "We're telling the community that this is possible. This is just the beginning of our work." CS 61A Lecture 34: Mapreduce I

CS61A The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs Instructor Brian Harvey Spring 2008 Introduction to programming and computer science. This course exposes students to techniques of abstraction at several levels: (a) within a programming language, using higher-order functions, manifest types, data-directed programming, and message-passing; (b) between programming languages, using functional and rule-based languages as examples. It also relates these techniques to the practical problems of implementation of languages and algorithms on a von Neumann machine. There are several significant programming projects, programmed in a dialect of the LISP language.
