2011 UCI MTB Marathon Worlds

Christoph Sauser (SUI) and Annika Langvad (DEN) were crowned World Champions at the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in Montello, Italy, on Sunday, 26th June. In front of huge crowds, Sauser, already Marathon World Champion in 2007 and Olympic cross-country World Champion in 2008, once again claimed the rainbow jersey. He covered the 115.7 km in 4:24:48, finishing 3m10 in front of Jaroslav Kulhavy (CZE). Last year's silver medallist, Mirko Celestino (ITA), took the bronze medal. In the Elite Women's race, the podium was made up of the same three athletes as last year but in a different order. Surprising more than a few, last year's bronze medallist Annika Langvad, became the new World Champion, covering the 98.3km in 4:20:33. Germany's Sabine Spitz took silver for the second year running while the 2010 World Champion Esther Süss (SUI) finished third. The 2011 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships were raced in hot, sunny conditions, drawing a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators. Following the tradition, two popular races and children's events were organised on Saturday with more than 2'000 athletes participating in Montello throughout the weekend.

26min Highlight Show @ UCI MTB WORLD CUP 2011 - Mont-Sainte-Anne - XCO

The fourth round of the cross-country competition in UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano took place in the legendary Canadian venue of Mont-Sainte-Anne and, once again, produced some fierce battles. One day after Canada Day celebrations, Catharine Pendrel (Luna) gave Canadian cycling fans another reason to celebrate with her victory at the only Canadian stop of the World Cup. Series leader Julie Bresset (BH-Suntour-Peisey Vallandry) finished third behind Irina Kalentieva (Topeak Ergon), after crashing while at the front of the race with Pendrel. After her crash, Bresset was slow to get going again, and Kalentieva was able to bridge up to her on the fourth lap. The Russian then dropped the World Cup leader to move into second, and Bresset briefly lost control of third to Katerina Nash (Luna) when she had to stop into the pit for a rear wheel change. Marie-Hélène Prémont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) was also close to catching her. However, Bresset was able to reel in Nash on the final half lap to hold onto to third, with Nash taking fourth and Premont fifth. Elite Women: Bresset holds on to series lead Pendrel remains in second in the overall standings after four rounds, 140 points behind Bresset. Premont jumped from ninth to third in the standings, at 480 points, tied on points with Lene Byberg (Specialized). "This was one of my main goals for the season," explained Pendrel. "I had a poor start, but was able to make my way up to the leaders on the first lap. Julie ...

2011 UCI Track Cycling World Championships: a perfect season for Jack Bobridge On Wednesday evening he contributed to Australia's success in the teams event, without leaving any chance to the rivals; yesterday, Jack Bobridge repeated his performance by easily taking the individual pursuit. The world record holder -- since 2nd February in Sydney -- beat the New Zealander Jesse Sergent, who never really gave the impression of endangering the young champion from Adelaide. At 22 years old, Bobridge took the only title that he had been missing, thus crowning off a perfect season. He has shown that he is the man to beat in the specialty, after two years of domination from the American Taylor Phinney. The second evening of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn was a good one for Australia, which on top of Bobridge's gold medal, clocked up a bronze with Michael Hepburn -- also in the individual pursuit -- before taking another prestigious victory in the Women's team sprint with Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch. The duo, which confirmed their victories at the last two Worlds in Pruszkow and in Copenhagen, beat Great Britain in the final, while China won the race-off for bronze medal against France. Great Britain's silver medal came after gold in the Women's team pursuit, which opened the evening's programme. Laura Trott, Wendy Houvenaghel and Danielle King didn't have much difficulty in the final again the United States. New Zealand finished third in this Olympic ...

UCI Athletes' Commission

The newly-formed UCI Athletes' Commission discussed technological issues during the second day of their meeting at the World Cycling Centre (WCC) in Aigle, Switzerland, today. After a training session in the morning, the eleven members, representing all cycling disciplines (road, track, mountain bike, cyclo-cross, BMX and para-cycling), met with the UCI President Mr Pat McQuaid, who explained how the Athletes' Commission fits into the wider cycling and Olympic families. UCI's Equipment Consultant, Professor Jan-Anders Månson, spoke to the members about technological issues including innovations and different materials used in construction of bikes and components. The discussions continued along the theme of security and technology. At the end of the day the Athletes' Commission met with members of the press to explain their role in tightening the link between the UCI and the athletes. France's track cycling sprint coach Florian Rousseau said he was happy and proud to be the first President of the Commission. He said the first step would be to make all athletes aware of its existence, its missions and its role. It would then be up to the Commission to "listen, help and meet their needs."

Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark, with an urban population of 1199224 (as of 1 January 2011) and a metropolitan population of 1918062 (as of 1 April 2011). With the completion of the transnational Øresund Bridge in 2000, Copenhagen has become the centre of the increasingly integrating Øresund Region. Within this region, Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmö are growing into a combined metropolitan area. Copenhagen is situated on the islands of Zealand and Amager. First documented in the 11th century, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the beginning of the 15th century. During the 17th century, under the reign of Christian IV, it became a significant regional centre. Copenhagen is a major regional centre of culture, business, media, and science, as indicated by several international surveys and rankings. Life science, information technology and shipping are important sectors and research & development plays a major role in the city's economy. Its strategic location and excellent infrastructure, with the largest airport in Scandinavia located 14 minutes by train from the city centre, have made it a regional hub and a popular location for regional headquarters[4] and conventions. Aaron Gwin (USA) just crossed the finish line after he had secured the last starting position with the best time in the qualifying and now the winners of the men's and women's DH race at the UCI World Cup stop in Leogang are set. None of the men was able to get close to Gwin's time (USA/3:44.181) and Floriane Pugin (FRA/4:29.427) finished with a comfortable lead ahead of her competitors. Cheered on by the spectators that had flocked to Saalfelden Leogang despite the changing weather, the athletes showed an absolutely spectacular race. About 13.000 mountain bike fans had come to Leogang on this long World Cup Weekend to attend this international biking highlight. _ The DH course in Leogang is famous for its technical sections that demand a great deal of concentration and skill of the riders. Especially the last passage with its roots made slippery from the rain posed quite a challenge for the riders. The track that measures 2.600 meters and stretches over 830 altitude meters, was a lot faster than last year, even though the mud did its part to slow the riders down. The Sunday afternoon was rung in by the ladies' DH finals. Even though the race itself took place in dry weather, the course was soft from the rain that had come down in buckets and especially the root section posed quite a challenge for many of the ladies, as well as the following men's race. Floriane Pugin (FRA) delivered a truly impressive run and overtook with her time of 4:29.427 the two British ladies ...

The final round of the UCI World Cup presented by Shimano concluded in Val di Sole, site of the 2008 world championships. In the cross-country final, Catharine Pendrel (Luna) took her third World Cup victory of the season at the World Cup Final in Val di Sole, Italy, but it wasn't enough to beat Julie Bresset (BH-Suntour-Peisey Vallandry) for the overall title, trailing by a mere 40 points in the final standings. Jaroslav Kulhavy (Specialized) is proving to be unbeatable, as he took his fifth win in seven races at the Elite Men's World Cup final. Kulhavy fended off a strong challenge by the Swiss duo of Nino Schurter and Florian Vogel (both Scott-Swisspower) to outsprint Schurter for the win. Pendrel came into the final race 140 points behind Bresset, and decided to attack from the start. "I figured I had nothing to lose, so I just went hard for the whole race," she explained. By the start of the second lap it was just Pendrel and Bresset, and the Canadian dropped her French rival on the steep climbs. Bresset was struggling with the heat and the climbs, and first Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa Multivan Merida) bridged up and dropped her, and then world champion Maja Wloszczowska (CCC Polkowice) did the same, joining Dahle Flesjaa. Annemiek van Vleuten (Nederland Bloeit) cemented her position at the top of the World Cup table with a stylish win at the final round in Plouay, France on Saturday. Twice winner in Plouay (2009, 2010), Emma Pooley (Garmin-Cervelo) opened with an attack which caused a break on the fourth of six laps of a 19.1 kilometre circuit. With her went World Cup leader, Annemiek van Vleuten (Nederland -Bloeit), Evelyn Stevens (HTC HighRoad), Chantal Blaak (AA Drink) and Erinne Willock (Tibco). The quartet quickly gained a gap of over one minute 40 seconds. Behind, the peloton was slowly diminished until the main chase group was just eleven riders, with the large peloton three minutes in arrears. On the fifth lap, Pooley attacked again and managed to get away, solo. She built a lead of around a minute. At the same time that she took on the leaders, Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit) accelerated fiercely from the chase group and began to bridge across the gap of over one minute to the front of the race. She needed less than ten kilometres to get to the group behind Pooley and when she did, she kept going. The group went with her, which meant that Pooley's advantage began to fall. For the closing kilometres, the Briton hung on at 15 seconds, but Vos persisted and Pooley was caught with three kilometres to go. Van Vleuten was attentive for a counterattack, which she was anticipating. Sure enough, Evelyn Stevens accelerated, but got nowhere alone, van Vleuten went with her and the pair ...

26min Highlight Show @ UCI MTB WORLD CUP 2011 - Pietermaritzburg 4X/ DHI - Round 1

The first Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano titles of the 2011 season were awarded in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, with the 4-Cross competition. Anneke Beerten (Milka Trek) of the Netherlands became the first to don the women's leader's jersey and Australia's Jared Graves (Yeti Fox Shox) the men's. The small women's field of eight riders meant that there was only a semi-final and then straight to the podium round. Anneke Beerten, after qualifying first, ahead of world champion Anita Molcik, rode away from the rest of her heat to cruise into the Final. She was joined by Fionn Griffiths (Team GR), Céline Gros (Morzine-Avoriaz/Haute Savoie) and the Swiss rider Lucia Oetjen. Missing from the medal round was Molcik, who struggled in her semi-final heat, and had to be content with winning the small final for fifth. Beerten again rode away from her competition in the final, while Griffiths and Gros battled for second, with Griffiths just pulling away at the end. On Easter Sunday the first Downhill competion of the season was held in Pietermaritzburg. While local favourite Greg Minnaar (Santa Cruz Syndicate) was not able to repeat his victory of two seasons ago, the thousands of fans were treated to exciting racing, with both the men's and women's titles won by less than three-tenths of a second. World champion Tracy Moseley (Trek World Racing) was the fastest qualifier in the women's field, and the last to start. Five riders before her had broken five minutes, with ...
