In the lab, University of Minnesota researchers show how a new multiferroic material they created begins as a non-magnetic material then suddenly becomes strongly magnetic as the piece of copper below is heated a small amount. When this happens, it jumps over to a permanent magnet. This demonstration represents the direct conversion of heat to kinetic energy.

Dental Sim Clinic at University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is changing how dentists are taught. New technology allows preclinical dental students to fine-tune their eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity skills, and to learn the techniques and procedures theyll need to treat patients all without having a real patient present. Theyll learn faster and better, with greater precision and accuracy. The lab has the potential to revolutionize the way dental students learn. The combined equipment in the 11200 square foot clinic 100 patient simulators with a realistic oral cavity, flexible cheeks, and a full complement of teeth, plus modern operatory equipment and flat-screen monitors; a technology room and wet lab; and 20 virtual reality-based advanced student stations equipped with life-like mannequins, computers, cameras and LED-tracked drills (that measure a students tooth preparation in tenths of a millimeter) exists at no other BIG 10 dental school.

Arduino Controlled LED Spinner - UMN ME2011 Final - Fall 2010 - Austin Granger

This is my final project for ME2011 Intro to Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. For those of you unfamiliar with the course, the assignment was to design and build a robot which does something interesting for 30 to 60 seconds with no human interaction and works reliably, while spending no more than $40 on materials. This machine uses 2 Arduinos running a combined 765 lines of code to produce simple text and graphics by rapidly flashing 5 spinning LEDs with precise timing. The timing is controlled by an IR sensor which reads a tab on the underside of the disk. If you are wondering what that whining noise is, it is the pulse-width modulation controlling the motor speed.

Get University of Minnesota to move Beyond Coal

Instructions: Step 1. Record a video of yourself (include your name, school, year in school) explaining why you want the U of M campus in Minneapolis to stop burning coal. Step 2. Upload your video as a response to this one (click on the add comment box below this video and then click the attach video button on the left.) Step 3: Spread the word to your friends and help us build the movement! U of M Twin Cities campus has the last coal burning power plant in Minneapolis!!! Let's get them to move beyond coal. Some reasons why coal is bad and DIRTY: Each year 21000 hospitalizations, 38000 heart attacks and 24000 deaths are caused by pollution from coal plants Coal plants are a leading contributor to global warming pollution, emitting more than 30% of the nation's annual carbon dioxide emissions Coal plants are one of the largest sources of mercury pollution in the US, polluting our lakes, rivers, and fish populations Coal ash waste sites contain harmful levels of arsenic, lead, mercury, selenium, aluminum and other toxins that can leach into groundwater Coal mining is destroying the local economies, public health and natural resources of rural communities across America More info @ www.sierraclub.org

UMN ME2011 Robot 2010 Justin Eggleston

This is my project for an engineering course at the University of Minnesota. It is a self-propelled machine that distributes standing dominos in evenly spaced intervals along a straight line. This is accomplished using 2 DC gear motors, an IR LED switch and a solenoid, all of which are controlled with the programmed Arduino microcontroller. The drive gear motor propels the robot through a 16:1 gear reducing transmission and is operated in timed intervals. The transmission turns a solid, one-piece axle and moves the robot in a straight line. The piston that pushes the domino onto the table is operated by the second motor through a 3:1 gear reduction. This moves the piston through a cycle that pushes a domino out the side of the robot. The IR LED beam is broken by the piston and tells the Arduino board when the piston is at its starting position. After the desired number of cycles has been performed, the robot takes one final step forward and then triggers a solenoid. This releases a weight that swings down and knocks the dominos over. See a previously built Stage 1 at www.youtube.com

Social media in politics

Many Americans turn to Facebook and Twitter to keep up with their friends and the latest in pop culture. But how and to what degree is social media being used by political campaigns during this year's election season? University of Minnesota assistant professor Heather LaMarre is currently working on a grant-funded project to study social media's role in campaign 2010, says that social media is a primary vehicle for campaigns to fundraise and communicate with the base. "Campaigns don't try to use it to persuade independents as much as they use it to get people fired up to give money, volunteer and get out the vote."
