Child marriages taking place in Rajasthan, India

Child marriage is illegal in India, but since it is a traditional custom in some places, the practice still takes place in some parts of Rajasthan. Children as young as 6 and 8 get married off in some villages here. Parents place garlands of currency notes in Indian Rupees around the necks of the grooms, as the young girls and brides look on. Child Marriage, Child Motherhood

Child marriage is deeply embedded in cultural traditions, which can be difficult to change. Girls who marry as children are often more susceptible to the health risks associated with early sexual initiation and childbearing, including HIV and obstetric fistula. Lacking status and power, these girls are often subjected to domestic violence, sexual abuse and social isolation. Furthermore, early marriage almost always deprives girls of their education or meaningful work, which contributes to persistent poverty. Early marriage inevitably denies children of school age their right to the education they need for their personal development, their preparation for adulthood, and their effective contribution to the future wellbeing of their family and society. Indeed, married girls who would like to continue schooling may be both practically and legally excluded from doing so. Poverty is one of the major factors underpinning early marriage. Where poverty is acute, a young girl may be regarded as an economic burden and her marriage to a much older -- sometimes even elderly -- man The notion of good reproductive health covers all aspects of the reproduction the capability to reproduce, and the freedom to decide if and when to bear a child. The right not to engage in sexual relations and the right to exercise control over reproduction may both be violated by early marriage Teenage girls are also more susceptible than more mature women to sexually transmitted infections (STIs ...

Child marriage in Rajasthan

Child Marriage in Rajasthan. The illegal practice of child marriage is rampant in Rajasthan. Many villagers do not support it but are scared to raise their voice against it by the fear of becoming an outcaste or facing life threatening consequences. Child marriage in Rajasthan and many rural parts of India is a very old and common practice, in many cases the brides and grooms are as young as three and six years respectively. Many villages perform these illegal marriages at government schools or hospitals. The police authorities actively stop these illegal marriages if they have prior information, but many a times they cannot take actions due to lack of evidence or witness. Many minor newly married couples are also brought to temples in Ajmer on the festival of Akha Teej. In cases of influential families the officials wash their hands off, saying that the kids come from adjoining areas that lie outside their jurisdiction. The state government issued strict instructions to the district administration to check child marriages on and around Akha Teej, but many a times they do not have information about these marriages. In several villages of Rajasthan half of the girls are still married off before they turn ten, while child marriage continues to be a harsh reality for other young girls in other rural parts of the country. FORCED MARRIAGE SURVIVOR LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO END CHILD MARRIAGE

A COURAGEOUS activist is launching a new campaign to end the forced marriage of girls in the world's poorest countries. Jasvinder Sanghera, who faced death threats after setting up the first national helpline for UK victims, is now helping highlight the plight of the world's poorest child brides. The activist, whose tireless work led to the development of the UK's Forced Marriage Act, is joining forces with the global children's charity Plan UK. The award-winning founder of Karma Nirvana is an ambassador of Because I am a Girl, the charity's campaign, for the rights and education of girls in poorer parts of the world. Ms Sanghera, who was disowned by her family at 16 for refusing to wed a man she had never met, is championing Take the Vow, Plan UK's petition andcall for action to end child marriage. The charity has identified forced, early marriage as one of the biggest barriers to education for girls in the poorest parts of the world. Its Take the Vow petition, launched this week, is pressing for an end to the practice of underage girls being forced to marry in these regions. Plan UK's call for action comes as a new report reveals that one in seven under-15-year-old girls will become child brides in the world's poorest countries. The report, entitled 'Breaking Vows', says girls forced to marry in their early teens in these regions, face a high risk of dying in child birth and are highly likely to drop out of school early.
