The last part of the merger of Continental and United was officially finished at 2 am Saturday. The travel industry braced for delays and computer glitches as Houston's hometown airline faded into history. There were more staff in the terminal at George Bush Intercontinental Airport to greet confused travelers, especially those who booked a flight under the Continental name. Workers spent Friday night talking down the old Continental Airlines signs and replacing them with new United signs.

So today someone told me that pre-merger Untied planes are "state of the art" and better than Continental. :/? I know right ...what planet are they living on? So for fun I just had to post of video of these "state of the art" UA aircraft ;p Exhibit one: There is this here Boeing 757, paint so faded, dull, and old, it don't even shine anymore. Exhibit B: CRJ-200 words really can't describe the sorry state of that plane. Paint flaking off and patches everywhere. Then compare with all the shinny clean Continental planes all around. If those United planes are "state of the art" then those Continental planes must have fallen from heaven. I like CO, but even I would never call their aircraft "state of the art" lol. The sad part is I already had my camera out ready to film those United planes, cause before the merger almost every PMUA plane I saw was looking shabby. Either it was pealing paint, dirty, had jet bridge rash, mismatched nose cone or engine cowling, or all of the above on one aircraft. Like Continental or not, one thing they can say is they kept their fleet looking top notch inside and out. That goes for their Express carriers too.

T&I Chairman James Oberstar voiced his strong opposition to the proposed merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines at a hearing before the Subcommittee on Aviation today, June 16, 2010. Oberstar said the continued consolidation and growth of airline alliances is moving the industry to a point where three mega carriers will dominate US air travel and their three code-sharing alliances will dominate international travel. Oberstar said this movement toward an aviation triopoly is not what he voted for in 1978 when Congress deregulated the US airline industry. He said he would begin work on a bill to reregulate the airlines if the United-Continental merger is approved.

By request,Continental Airlines Newark Hub re-branded into United Airlines. It looks identical to Houston Hub, and I doubt to many people will notice. It looks just like the old Continental. The Globes are all there and the United in Blue matches the Globe. It still looks like Continental to me. This is a change I can live with. I like how the signs also still say Continental Airlines. This video shows the gates, customer service and the United Club. At least Continental has nice gate podiums to begin with. The cardboard crap at Pre-Merger United looks bad. I wish they spend more money and make the new United at Pre-Merger United look like the Continental Podiums. So with the new United there will be two different kinds of gate podiums. The nice Pre-Merger Continental ones like in Newark and Houston (other CO cities) and cardboard looking United ones which I see more off at Pre-Merger United gates that are now new United.

This is an important step toward a US Airways and American Airlines merger, but it is far from a done deal. The three unions — the Allied Pilots Association (APA), the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and the Transport Workers Union (TWU) — issued a statement announcing their support of a US Airways-American Airlines merger. "This significant step represents our shared recognition that a merger between American Airlines and US Airways is the best strategy and fastest option to complete the restructuring of American Airlines, enabling it to exit the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and restore American Airlines to a preeminent position in the airline industry," the unions said in a statement. The combined carrier will be branded American Airlines and be based in Fort Worth, Texas, according to Dave Bates, APA President. Personally, I am extremely concerned about the merger taking place. The industry has been consolidating for 3-5 decades now, and the trend is continuing. Look last year, the merger between Northwest Airlines and Delta Airlines created the world's largest. One point I think many are forgetting, include what make up 50 percent of the travel routes for domestic flights, the regional airlines. When the merger occurs, the contracts within the regional business must be affected. Just as an example, CommutAir (Operating as Continental Connection) has strict ties with Continental Airlines. In the case of a merger, and with the current airlines alliance being with strictly Continental, I think it will have strong negative results if a merger occurs.Why would United not say to substitute another regional carrier in place (As CommutAir only operates 16 aircraft) for these routes due to the vast growth of size. This would therefore put CommutAir in an extremely unfavorable position, and I can see this leading to possible bankruptcy for CommutAir. This is one example of a regional airlines, but imagine the others as well. Another look back at history: Gulfstream International Airlines Codeshare with Northwest Airlines expired on June 15, 2009 because of the merger between Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines. Don't think that when you board a Continental Connection flight, that your flying with Continental Airlines. This merger affects regional, subsidiary airlines, and you will see <b>...</b>

US Airways says it has taken a first step to a potential merger with rival American Airlines. The agreement with the unions was reported by Bloomberg News on Thursday.
