UK Universities Easier than US Colleges? Drama!

Will, an American student studying abroad in the United Kingdom, says that universities there are much easier than the college experience he's had in the USA. His argument - tests are easier (or nonexistent), students don't go to class, and they take fewer classes. Drama! Ana and John debate if there's something to Will's argument. [Spoiler: We think its totally dependent on which University you're looking at.] What do you think? Are schools in the UK academically easier than in the USA? Or is Will just seeing things from one perspective? Does the different academic philosophies in different countries matter here? Let us know! Because of their success, Montgomery college is now receiving support and recognition from their school. Raza Naqvi caught up with the team in Maryland where they practice, and Brian Wagner reported on the tournament in Florida.

I Go to College for the Financial Aid (Original Song)

www.valueofcollege.com http www.tobyturner.com I go to college for the financial aid. Direct deposit is how I like to be paid. I got some Student financial aid refers to funding intended to help students pay educational expenses including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, etc. for education at a college, university, or private school. General governmental funding for public education is not called financial aid, which refers to awards to specific individual students. Certain governments, eg Nordic countries, provide student benefit. A scholarship is sometimes used as a synonym for a financial aid award, although grants and student loans are also components of financial aid packages from students' intended colleges.

Inmates Find Hope in College Classes at San Quentin Prison

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Last week we told you about a program that trains women in prison to start their own businesses after their release. Today we tell you about one of the few prisons in America that offer college-level classes: San Quentin State Prison in California. Jody Lewen volunteered to teach in the college program at San Quentin in nineteen ninety-nine. She was a graduate student. The program had a small group of volunteers and no money. But a year later the director resigned. Ms. Lewen agreed to run the program until a permanent director could be found. "But once I started doing the work and got more deeply involved ... I started to think more and more about what this program could become."The Prison University Project seeks to prepare men to lead thoughtful and productive lives inside and outside of prison. Twenty courses are offered each semester. Classes offered this past semester included English, math, United States history, and Russian and Soviet history. Others included Asian-American theater, Spanish, biology, sociology, philosophy and criminal justice.Three hundred inmates take classes every semester. They earn credits toward an associate of arts degree in liberal arts from Patten University in Oakland, California. Ms. Lewen says getting teachers to volunteer is not difficult, although some are nervous about their first trip to San Quentin. She has recruited more than one hundred fifty ...

The Case Against College Entitlements : Why We Don't Need More Public Funding For Higher Education

President Barack Obama has declared that his administration aims to make college affordable to everyone by greatly expanding government aid to middle class families. The Washington Post says that Obama's higher education proposals, which include creating a brand new Pell Grant entitlement, "could transform the financial aid landscape for millions of students while expanding federal authority to a degree that even Democrats concede is controversial." But what if President Obama has it backwards? What if America is sending too many people to college? A recent study found that "Nationally, four-year colleges graduated an average of just 53% of entering students within six years." If 40 percent of students who enter college drop out before graduation and over 50 percent of students take six years to graduate, perhaps Obama is focusing on the wrong issue. Reason.tv's Michael C. Moynihan sat down with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and the American Enterprise Institute's Charles Murray, author of the recent book Real Education, to analyze how Obama's higher-education plans will impact the economic and cultural future of the United States. Scroll down for embed code, an audio podcast, and iPod and HD versions. For a YouTube version of this video, go here.
The Truth About College Choice

Campus Progress is working to highlight disturbing practices at some for-profit colleges across the country. For-profit schools currently serve 10 percent of US students but account for 25 percent of federal student aid—and 44 percent of student loan defaults. While there are some quality programs at for-profit schools, too many for-profit programs are marked by skyrocketing tuition, high dropout rates, and insurmountable debt for many students. The Department of Education has proposed regulations to enforce current laws that require programs, like those offered at for profit colleges, to prepare students for "gainful employment." Visit www.campusprogress.org to find out more about the work Campus Progress and other organizations are doing to ensure that the Department of Education's proposed "gainful employment" rule is implemented.
