Wednesday, January 27, 1943: The first USAAF raid over a German target is carried out. A total of 55 American bombers raid Wilhelmshaven, losing 3 bombers and claiming 22 German planes shot down. This clip contains the unedited crew interviews following the raid. Notable is (then Colonel) Curtis Lemay referring the the raid as "rather dull". Also one Sergent uses the word "damn" during his description which is quickly re-shot and the Sergent looks at loss for words. I think this un-edited film provides a better perspective of aircrew character and personality than any other film I have seen.

The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") was the world's first operational turbojet fighter aircraft.It was produced in World War II and saw action starting in 1944 as a multi-role fighter/bomber/reconnaissance/interceptor warplane for the Luftwaffe. German pilots nicknamed it the "Sturmvogel," (Stormbird) while the Allies called it the "Turbo." The Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war due to its late introduction, with 509 claimed Allied kills (although higher claims are sometimes made), against more than 100 Me 262 losses.

This is the official training film for one of the most significant raids by the USAAF in World War Two. The raid was mounted by 178 US Liberator bombers of the North Africa-based Ninth USAAF comprised of five groups of B-24 Liberators - three of them borrowed from the Eighth Air Force in the United Kingdom. The August 1st 1943 raid took place on the oilfields near Ploesti in Romania. By 1943 these oilfields were the most heavily defended targets in Europe, and surprise was not achieved as the Germans were reading Ninth USAAF's codes. When the mission's top two navigators were shot down before arriving at the target confusion followed: 54 bombers were lost, 41 of them in action, and 532 of their crews were either killed, wounded, or made prisoners-of-war. A short video I made with still pictures at the site of the former USAAF base at Framlingham, Suffolk, UK, Part of the 8th airforce, the 390th BG (Heavy) flew from here in WW2. The control tower is extant and is open to visitors for free, with the museum beneath. It is well woth a visit if you are ever in the area. After the picture montage, there is a video showing a large B-17G built by a local. The diorama it sits on is very well made too, and the simulated motor sound with the props spinning was great to see.

The action is broken down into daily decisions and raids with results so specific that every single serviceable aircraft is accounted for at the beginning and end of every mission. You can play a full length campaign game starting on August 1, 1943 or 3 shorter 1 month campaigns. You can either play as the American Commander of the 8th Air Force in England and the 15th Air Force in Italy bombing primary and secondary targets of 12 different types spread over 91 cities. As the German Commander of the Luftwaffe on the defensive you direct your planes for interception. Victory in the game is determined by several factors including aircraft loss ratios but is mainly based on the Axis Industrial Damage Level (AIDL).There are 5 levels of play for up to 2 people. What I think: A nice game, unless you don't like planes. ;)

Then we went onto Chas' Norman Landberg B24 crew memorial at Ford End Farm, Ivinghoe. 508th Airborne veteran Ernie Lamson remembers his brother Walter who perished when this Liberator vacuum pump failed & crashed November 15th 1944. Next we took the party to the crash site of B24 The Beast of Bourbon. Des recited the story of the crash. Chas demostrated how he has found parts of the plane in the field over several years. Stephen Hutton (author of Squadrons of Deception)gave a talk on the history of the plane as his father Iradel Hutton was based at Cheddington too. This video is a compilation of veteran's recollections and some period footage of 3rd ERS operations in the Pacific in WWII. My Dad was a member of the squadron during the later stages of the Pacific campaign and also post-war in Okinawa as a part of US occupation forces. He later was stationed in Japan in another rescue squadron flying the SA-16 in Korea.
