The Samara was to build on the success of the traditional Fiat 124-based range, by providing a car that combined a robust build and ease of maintenance with a modern style. It was produced in various three, four and five door designs with 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 litre petrol engines. Lada had hoped that the Samara would enable it to compete for sales in the mainstream European car market. It was the second autonomous design from AvtoVAZ (the first was the Niva SUV), and the first one not based on the Fiat derived mechanics. The UK had to wait nearly three years for the Samara to go on sale after its launch in the USSR, but sales were reasonably strong when the first versions of the car left forecourts in November 1987. The Samara was a major change compared to other Lada models at the time, with a modern hatchback body-style and front-wheel drive as well as new engines featuring on the car. But the low-rent plasticky interior, sub-standard finish and lack of dynamic qualities were a big let-down for those who had been hoping for a car that was comparable with Western contemporaries. Many budget buyers, Lada's main targets, stuck with the old Riva. Still, the Samara remained on sale in the UK right up to 4 July 1997, when the decision was made to withdraw from the UK and most other export markets.

1997 VAZ 2110 Test Drive. The Lada 110 (known in Russia as the VAZ-2110) is a Russian sedan car built by AvtoVAZ since 1995. It also spawned two close derivatives - the 111 estate and 112 hatchback. It was one of the first generation of Ladas produced after the fall of communism, but before foreign investment and partnerships influenced the direction of AvtoVAZ. The development stages of the 110 began in the early 1990s, with a prototype coupé called the Katran 1.6i produced that was first demonstrated at the AvtoVAZ Togliatti factory in 1991. A lack of financial investment stalled the project, but the design of the Katran prototype was revisited in around 1995, when work on the 110 series began, and clear similarities between the Katran's shape and the 110's overall design can be seen. The 110 enjoyed moderate sales success in the domestic Russian market; although early models were hindered by a number of recurring reliability problems. And since I know five of the managers at a local theater, we got to shoot this video in one. Like Monsters, it was filmed and recorded at the same time. But we only had a little over 5 hours to shoot and record everything, since we had to work after hours and be out before 6am. Luckily, we'd rehearsed this one a few times before the shoot, so there weren't nearly as many screw ups, and I was walking without a cane at this point. But even still, we only got to about half of the shots Mark and I had originally planned. I think it still worked out, but I'd have loved to see how some of the planned stuff would've looked on film. Oh well. But like the Monsters video, we had the "backing band" in masks. There wasn't any real reason for this. We just thought it looked funny.
