Vega-tables
Written by Brian Wilson & Van Dyke Parks. Performed and produced by Harrison Dole. I recorded this on my old four track. The sound quality isn't the best because of all the track consolidation and build up of static, but it isn't bad either. I do everything on the track, which includes all vocals, bass, percussive carrot chewing, water pouring, recorder, maracas, hand claps, etc.. I also shot all the footage and edited it. Just a fun little personal project. Smilin' Singin' Vegans (Brian Wilson, 'Vega-Tables' from the LP, SMiLE)
READ THIS: 'Vega-Tables' from the LP, SMiLE. In 2004, Brian Wilson, made a surprise announcement that he was going to finish the mythical SMiLE record using his current touring band. He contacted Van Dyke Parks, and the duo re-recorded the album. SMiLE won the Grammy award for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the piece "Mrs O'Leary's Cow" (aka "Fire"). R&R Historical Footnote: In 1966 Brian Wilson commissioned Van Dyke Parks to write lyrics for the Beach Boys' next LP, the ambitious but ill-fated SMiLE. Parks and Wilson collaborated on songs for the album. Members of the Beach Boys strongly opposed SMiLE, notably Mike Love who negatively called Parks' lyrics "Acid Alliteration". The combination of resistance from the group and their record company, and Wilson's growing mental health problems and spiraling drug use, led Parks to quit the project in early 1967. It was shelved a few months later. Several Wilson/Parks songs from the SMiLE sessions later appeared on the Beach Boys' replacement album Smiley Smile, including "Heroes and Villains" and "Wind Chimes." Other songs slated for SMiLE, including "Cabinessence" and "Surf's Up," were compiled by Carl Wilson and included on subsequent LPs. SMiLE acquired legendary status as one of the great lost works of the sixties. SMiLE~The Mujan Remix: Part 17- Vega-Tables
Vega-Tables- I replaced the ending of the 2011 version with the more traditional "Vegetable Fade" from the Sessions. I do not feel the 2011 ending was meant for Vega-Tables, while the fade most obviously was. I added in the best of the "Vegetable Arguments" to coincide with the humorous element of the song, and at the end of the fade-out I put it the crunching segments and the best of the "Psychodelic Vegetables" outtakes. There's a lot of material that was made for Vega-Tables, and I feel it was very important to Brian. It was one of the more complex songs on SMiLE, one of the few to survive into the Smiley sessions AND be reprised at the end of a later album (as "Mama Says") and now on the box set it is the only song to get a single release along with the album's centerpiece Heroes and Villains and it's crowning ballad Surf's Up. To me, this justifies the length of my new extended cut. As for where this song is placed on my mix, I feel that other releases/bootlegs that put it so close after Surf's Up are doing both songs an injustice. Surf's Up is, as I said, the crown jewel, the great sweeping poetic ballad of SMiLE. Vega-Tables on the other hand, is a giant show-stopper that celebrates humor, happiness and health. Putting the two one after the other is too jarring and destroys the impact each would have seperately. So, I stuck with tradition by having Vega-Tables come after Workshop, but (for previously explained reasons) I moved Workshop to the end of Fire. I feel <b>...</b>
