The Victorians: Painting The Town (Ep.1 BBC)

Jeremy Paxman takes his love of Victorian paintings as the starting point for a journey into Victorian Britain. Such pictures may not be fashionable today, but they are a goldmine of information about the most dynamic age in British history. He investigates the most dramatic event of Victorian Britain: the explosion of great cities. At first the Victorians feared these new monsters in their midst, but then grew to love and transform them. Jeremy explores the canals and sewers, suburbs and back streets, workhouses and magnificent buildings of the great Victorian city, while also experiencing the fun-filled chaos of Derby Day. The Victorians: Having It All (Ep.3 BBC)

Jeremy Paxman continues his exploration of the Victorian world. Inspired by the paintings of the day, he tells the story of Victorian power. Railways, factories and military might made Britain the richest country in the world. Paxman finds British generals dressed in togas in the Foreign Office, meets the horse that led the Charge of the Light Brigade, drives a steam train and visits a fort, a steelworks and a millionaire's mansion to tell the story of the time when Britain seemed to be having it all. The Victorians: Dreams and Nightmares (Ep.4 BBC)

In the final episode, Jeremy Paxman discovers how in the dying years of Victoria's reign, artists led a revolt against Victorian values of money and morality, preferring to create a world filled with medieval knights and damsels, dreams and fairies, sex and death. He meets a pair of spiritualist mediums, visits a collection of Victorian nudes and is allowed into Broadmoor hospital in search of the mad Victorian artist Richard Dadd.

Toktela - Victorian Book Of The Dead

Music now available for free download. www.last.fm Post-mortem photography is the practice of photographing the recently deceased. Music by Toktela. Okay I guess it's time to speak about this video I made almost 2 years ago & clear up a few things as there seems to be a lot of misunderstandings in regards to my intentions. The music on this video was recorded by me and this isn't how I originally intended the music to be. I had already recorded a nice slow sombre respectful sounding string section for this video which I'm sure 99% of viewers would of preferred but the truth is that's not how I felt when preparing this video. After spending many many hours / days / weeks looking at postmortem photography I decided to record music that represented the way I felt inside, that feeling wasn't necessarily a nice one, that feeling was the music I created for this video. I'm not going to explain in detail the sounds used to create the music (as I can't remember them) but I can tell you all the sounds used are there for a reason and relate in someway to the subject of the video. I 100% stand by my decision to use this music & I fully respect the fact that not many will like it. No amount of hatred or abuse will ever change my mind on this subject, as an artist I will always stay true to my own feeling. THE MUSIC ON THIS VIDEO WILL NEVER BE CHANGED. I have no interest in trying to please the masses, this video was made for me and made the way I wanted it, you're more than welcome ...

How to Iron & Prep Victorian Corset Dress Demo

bit.ly Harness the classic elegance and style of Victorian women (without the pain) with our Victorian Dresses; a must have for the steampunk madam. To give you that distinct Victorian ruffle look make sure you have: Your dress, a petticoat, and an Iron. ~Fold the mock petticoat's layers. ~Iron them so their is a crisp line; to give it that ruffled layer look. ~Repeat until you reach the bottom. ~To make the faux-bows: scrunch the sides like a fan, then iron. ~Continue to make bows where you'd like. Just remember to pull the back bows out so you don't iron over them. ~Put on your petticoat and adjust the pre-laced corset. ~Admire your princess perfect look. Women during the Victorian period, especially women in the upper social classes, were extremely conscious of what they wore. Victorian women's fashion is seen as uncomfortable, cumbersome, and complex by today's standard with the layers of undergarments, gigantic metal hoop skirts, tight fitting corsets, and heavy petticoats, but at the same time they were also ostentatious and romantic. Frills, laces, beautiful embellished collars, elaborate-accented sleeves, pelerines, fans, gloves, extravagant hats, and parasols hid the bulky uncomfortable layers that they wore underneath. The finished look of a Victorian woman has an illusion of ease and comfort with affluence and grace. tl;dr Victorian dresses are classy, elegant, graceful and romantic. Now without uncomfortable hassles and/or pain. Brought to you by: www ...

Beauty - Victorian Era to 1930's

Watch this video on my site www.lisae.me.uk for product links, tips and more info. This was the most difficult video I've ever had to edit as I had to cut out so many great anecdotes, interesting facts and amazing products. Seriously, I think I could easily have made a 10 minute film for each decade! Anyway here is a little glimpse of my visit to the house and collection of Madeleine Marsh. I tried to stay calm and focused but inside I was bursting to get my hands on all the amazing treasures that surrounded me! The second half of this video will feature the 1940's through to the 70's and some incredible items - Mary Quant crayons, the IT palette all the cool British girls aspired to own during the war and a powder compact in the shape of a grand piano... to name just a few! Stay tuned X Madeleines book is called The History of Compacts and Cosmetics: Beauty From Victorian Times to the Present Day and you can buy it on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk All images from the book in this video are shown with permission.

Queen Victoria Part 1

This is the remarkable and often moving story of Britain's longest reigning monarch --a woman who gave her name to an entire era. History remembers the Queen's blissfully happy marriage to Prince Albert and her withdrawal from public life after his untimely death: the entire Victorian period saw massive social and economic changes in British society. And, of course, the Queen's red-coated armies marched to win her an Empire. Featuring re-creations and dramatized reconstructions, this informative and entertaining program provides a unique portrait of a fascinating woman and a memorable time in British history. It also includes superb period imagery and photographs plus expert commentary and historical analyses.

Victorian Christmas Stroll

Christmas traditions are created by families and passed along from generation to generation. These time-honored rituals thrill us when we are children and later, as adults, they call forth memories that comfort us in an uncertain world. Experience an old-fashioned holiday with your loved ones at Henry B. Plant Museum's annual Victorian Christmas Stroll from December 1st to 23rd, 10 am to 8 pm daily. Beneath towering silver minarets, an extravagantly adorned former Tampa Bay Hotel captures the spirit of the season -- Victorian style. There are 14 exhibit rooms; each dazzling with trimmed trees uniquely designed in 19th century themes and antique holiday accessories. While strolling down the Grand Hallway, your spirits will soar as you become immersed in carolers singing, Charles Dickens, much loved toys and wrapped gifts, Christmas stockings and Old Saint Nick. At the Victorian Christmas Stroll, the essence of an old-fashioned holiday is observed and honored as Tampa's most popular family tradition. Complimentary spiced cider and savory cookies will be served on the veranda every day, and each evening (6 - 7:45 pm) carolers will perform music for your merriment. Visitors are invited to sing with the carolers in front of the 18-foot tree in the hallway. There is an admission charge for adults, seniors (65 and older), and youth (4-18 years). Check our website for up-to-date pricing. Group tours are welcome: please make reservations for parties of 20 or more with Sally Shifke ...

The Children Who Built Victorian Britain Part 1

The catalyst to Britain's Industrial Revolution was the slave labour of orphans and destitute children. In this shocking and moving account of their exploitation and eventual emancipation, Professor Jane Humphries uses the actual words of these child workers (recorded in diaries, interviews and letters) to let them tell their own story. She also uses groundbreaking animation to bring to life a world where 12-year-olds went to war at Trafalgar and six-year-olds worked the fields as human scarecrows.

Australian Girl Survives 111m Bungee Fall into Crock Infested Victorian Fall

AN Australian tourist survived a 111m fall into a crocodile-infested river after her bungee cord snapped. Erin Langworthy, 22, plunged into the Zambezi River, which divides Zambia and Zimbabwe, on December 31. The West Australian woman fell headfirst into the river after the jump with Safari Par Excellence. Describing her survival as a "miracle", she told Channel 9 she blacked out as she hit the water. "It felt like I had been slapped all over," she said. After hitting the water she started swimming downstream but her bungee cord became snagged on rocks. "I actually had to swim down to yank the bungee cord out of what it was caught in," she said. When she made it to rocks, her rescuers rolled her on her back. "All the water I inhaled meant I couldn't breathe and I made them roll me on to my side and that's when I started coughing up water and blood." The Safari Par Excellence website says the bungee experience is "111 metres of pure adrenalin!". "Based on The Victoria Falls Bridge, the Bungi (sic) jump can certainly be classed as the most scenic in the world. Not for the faint hearted!" the website says. Zambia's Southern Province police commissioner Brenda Muntemba said Ms Langworthy was treated at Victoria Falls clinic in Zimbabwe and evacuated to South Africa.
