"THEY START THE VICTROLA" 1914 BILLY MURRAY Victor 78rpm Record Played On Victor III Phonograph

Recorded on July 29, 1914 here is a real favorite Billy Murray recording of mine on the Victor Talking Machine label played on one of my Victor III phonographs. For your listening enjoyment this is "They Start The Victrola (And Go Dancing Around The Floor). In this delightful song Billy tells us of a jealous gent whose wife is getting a lot of attention from other men when they go out dancing. So, he decides to buy a new Victor Talking Machine so that they can dance at home and she can be his alone. This is not an easy record to find. In fact I have found, for example, no less than 10 examples of "Uncle Josh Buys A Victrola" compared to just 1 example of this record. Thankfully, my one example (here) is in lovely condition. Hope you enjoy this and, as always, thanks for stopping in.

1908 VV-XX Victor Victrola VTLA Phonograph Playing Special RED CROSS Star Spangled Banner Record

Here is my 1908 Victor Victrola Model VV-XX. This very expensive, elaborately hand carved, highly ornate model cost a whopping $300 in 1908 and represented the top of the line model at that time for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Few customers could afford it and production was limited and brief. I feel that this model is the most attractive of any of Victor's floor model Victrolas. I have done absolutely nothing to this Victrola with the exception of applying some good old fashoned furniture polish and rebuilding the original gold plated reproducer. I added a little extra footage at the end of the video of a small sampling of some of my collection of early 7-inch Victor records. Most of the different variations of the early Victor 7-inch records are represented. I also included a very unusual early Kaiser Wilhelm Columbia picture label record. The Red Cross record was simply selected at random from my record collection due to its colorful picture label with Margaret Woodrow Wilson. I thank you sincerely for stopping in for a visit and hope that you enjoy the video.

Here is some really rare 1930 Black Jazz played by Cliff Jackson and His Krazy Kats on a Van Dyke 78rpm record (Van Dyke was one of Grey Gulls many labels). This rather obscure black jazz band included Melvin Herbert & Henry Goodwin on Trumpet, "Noisy" Richardson on trombone, Rudy Powell, Earl evans-alto sax & clarinet, Horace Langhorn-tenor sax & clarinet, Cliff Jackson-Piano, Andy Jackson-banjo, Chester Campbell-Tuba, and Percy Johnson on Drums. "The Terror" was composed by Jackson & Somlev. The Victrola is a 1925 Victor Two Door Orthophonic Credenza.

It was said that he was the "Caruso of baritones" but Caruso was more famous because, well, tenors get all the chics. This is a rare one-sided English-made HMV pink label. Here is an unusual 1901 Pre-Dog Victor A-821 Fortune Telling Record. This is a multi-Track disc with three recording tracks that go all the way through the record. The Title is "Fortune Telling Puzzle Record a song and two Fortunes, See if you can find them". The Victrola Is Victor VV-VI Type F, Victors best selling Table Model Victrola from about 1913. I am using a Fibre or bamboo needle on this scarce litte 7" Predog Victor. You did not project any where near the volume that you would get from a steel needle, but the Fibre needles were much more gentle on the record and the possibility of damage to the record is virtually eliminated.

Victrola 10-50 sitting on table & Harry Reser's Syncopators: Someone is Losin' Susan Record Changer

Oh, just a fun movie from a recent Victor 10-50 service job. Greatest Banjoist HARRY RESER with his Syncopators in a great piece of late 20''s tongue-in-cheek dance music with some great solos: Someone Is Losin' Susan (Tom Stacks vocal) 7-21-1926 New York, New York Columbia (unforturnately, Reser's own solo is VERY disappointing) Check out more tunes and bio at: redhotjazz.com Once you have put the changer parts in a bucket with kerosene overnight, scrubbed all the parts and the bedplate (only brushes and rags - brillo pads will ruin the plating !), and especially cleaned the motor gears, the govenor bushing, then you start putting everything back together. So, after a while, the 10-50 changer sits on the table, and that's where you start playing it to check for proper record pickup (not trivial with a replacement lift pad, they usually need to be filed quite a bit), record reject, and adjust the position of the tone arm collar for proper elevation and correct 10" and 12" indexing. It's really fun to see the machine cycling on the table, with all the gears exposed, and though the "horn" is only the tone arm and the 3" flange at the bottom, the machine sounds actually amazingly well just as it is. From bad experiences a couple of warnings: - there must be a round felt piece under the turntable, and the changer must NOT be run without the platter on top. Otherwise the motor can overheat badly. - When you take the changer in and out of the cabinet, wrap the rails in towels ...

Victrola VV-X

The X was launched in late 1910 as one of the early tabletop models, replacing the unsuccessful VV-XII. It used a 12-inch turntable and had "Wall of Troy" decorative carving below the lid (left). The earliest of the tabletop X models used the bullet brake design; later versions used the tab brake. It is estimated that 15500 tabletop versions were made before the X was converted to a floor model in 1912. The first floor version used unusual long Queen Anne legs, and looked like a table model sitting on a long-legged table. This is often called the "Spindle Leg" or "Spider Leg" Victrola (below right). Approximately 15000 "Spider Leg" versions were produced. This design was not popular with the buying public, as indicated by the fact that Victor had to cut the retail price by 33% in the spring of 1913 in order to move the large unsold stock. One of the reasons for the failure of this design was likely the inconvenience of storing (and properly balancing) heavy record albums on the small open-ended storage shelf. In early 1913, the X was again transformed into a solid-sided conventional floor model Victrola (below left). The earliest solid sided X's used vertical record storage slats, which were converted to conventional horizontal album shelves in 1914. The Victrola X was discontinued in 1921. The X was available in either mahogany or oak, but mahogany was by far the most popular choice. Data shows that large blocks of serial numbers were "skipped" on this model ...

Orthophonic Victrola-Western Electric Demo Record - Victor 19571

Jack Shilkret's Orchestra, recorded ?/?/25, (from "My Girl") matrix BVE-31752-?, as played on 1926 Orthophonic Victrola FOUR-THREE. This is the "AA" side, VE electrical recording, catalog number engraved in runout area: 19571-AA. Unknown if this is an electrical dub from original acoustical pressing or if this is a new recording. "VE" in oval stamped into runout at top of this "AA" side. This is a Canadian pressing. The American Victor release featured only the acoustic sides of this number, coupled with Waring's Pennsylvanians "Will You Remember Me?" Victor page 4713 shows 4 takes of matrix 31573 (with no comment about being electric; for a couple of the early electrics, the handwritten comments say they are electric, but the file does not show BVE in the typed version). 31573 is by Jack Shilkret's Orchestra conducted by Nat on take -1 and by Leroy Shield on takes -2 through -4. Later in the page, four takes of matrix 31752 show as follows: These are by the International Novelty Orch, conducted by Jack, with Nat on celeste, with the title One Stolen Kiss; take -2 issued as 19568A. In his American Dance Band Discography, Rust lists both recordings just as I found them in the Victor pages. Perhaps an electric recording of "You and I," which should be assigned matrix BVE-31753 (not 31752), was recorded later, and hence is NOT one of the earliest Victor electrics.

Victrola VV-220 playing "Typhoon" 78

Victrola VV-220 playing Typhoon by Frank Banta and Harry Akst (Columbia A2953). This VV-220 is just beautiful in unrestored condition, although I have rebuilt the reproducer with all-new rubber parts (bought a rebuild kit consisting of the two red rubber diaphragm gaskets, a new mica diaphragm and two support springs, but didn't realize at the time I also needed a tonearm support gasket (?) as well as a thumbscrew...previous owner had jammed a green toothpick (?!?) in there. All elements to this seven-piece rebuild have represented noticeable jumps in sound quality, although I am not entire sure if I am "all there" yet or not. That said, and I just found this out a few days ago, I do know that my Victrola will not start on it's own due to the fact that it only has one of the three original governor weights! This also has the effect of making the whole machine shake with a speed of about eight cycles per second which lends a "quivvering" aspect to the tone this machine is currently making. Perhaps you notice this. In any event, here is Typhoon on my VV-220 as it now plays. My next purchase is those weights and a repost! Also I was fortunate enough to get a digital camera "gratis" from Amazon Vine program...they send you stuff to review and you - for all intents and purposes - get to keep the stuff. So I scored a Fujifilm / Fuji Finepix XP10, which is what I shot this video on. I bumped the quality to HD / widescreen "1280" and that is what is represented in this video. I ...

Cline's Collegians Peruna SMU Dallas Roaring 20's Victrola

Cline's Collegians was composed of students and ex-students of SMU. This record was recorded in Dallas by Brunswick on Saturday, October 20, 1928, two weeks after SMU played Army. Durward J. Cline, who died in 1982, led bands in Dallas from the 1920s through at least the 1960s and perhaps longer. It is truly a hot recording, equal in quality to any of the mainstream popular dance bands of the era and not at all what one would expect from a college fight song or a group of students and ex-students. This is one of the more unusual names for a college fight song. Peruna is the name of a black Shetland pony which attends every SMU football game as its mascot - a tradition since 1932 - and they are currently on Peruna VIII. However, the name has a much more interesting history and origin. In the early 20th century, Peruna was one of many patent medicines containing mostly, if not all, alcohol - which made it a greatly applied and sought after elixir during Prohibition days. Thus the lyrics "She'll be loaded with Peruna" - based on the tune "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain."

HOWARD LANIN - MELANCHOLY LOU - ROARING 20'S VICTROLA

This is a tune with a definite Charleston influence from 1925 by Howard Lanin's Ben Franklin Dance Orchestra, Melancholy Lou. This recording was made in the main hall of Victor's Church Studio and is used as an example in the following excerpt: "The difference in sound between the studios can be easily heard on the Howard Lanin recording (Victor 19797) of September 29, 1925. One side of the record Melancholy Lou (33433-2) was recorded in Studio 1, and one can hear the beautiful sound of the church hall. The other side, Don't Wake Me Up, Let Me Dream (33434-5), has the compact and dry sound of Studio 2 that was on the upper floor of the other side of the building. The recordings of Jelly Roll Morton (July 8 to July 12, 1929) seem to have the sound of studio 2 and not studio 1 as Laurie Wright states in his book 'Mr Jelly Lord' (iv) (see also picture 14)"
