Death Sparks Violent Riots in Greece

ANCHOR: The killing of a 15-year-old Athens boy has sparked violent riots in Greece. Protestors are outraged over police gunfire that caused the death. STORY: Some say this riot is the worst Greece has seen in years. Police are bombarded with petrol bombs, injuring two-dozen officers. Violence started on Saturday, when about 30 youths attacked a police patrol car. The police shot dead one of the teenagers, which later sparked protests in Athens, Thessaloniki and other towns. Two police officers are currently being detained and prosecutors say one will be charged with manslaughter, the other with aiding and abetting him. Greece Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis publicly apologised to the father of the dead boy and promised "the state will act" so the "tragedy won't be repeated". However, this hasn't curbed anger on the streets. Tear gas chokes central Athens and protesters pelt petrol bombs at police, setting fire to dozens of shops, banks and cars. A protest in Thessaloniki also turns violent, with 1000 demonstrators chanting "Killers in Uniform," throwing firebombs at police. The Karamanlis government has recently dropped in the polls, due to scandals and poverty. One in five Greeks live below the poverty line and there are numerous strikes and protests. Many believe this may be the final straw for the PM and early elections are expected next year.

Greece Union Strike: Video of violent riots in Athens, police clash with masked youths

Dozens of masked youths have been clashing with police at a union protest in Athens during a general strike against the cash-strapped government's planned pension and labor reforms. Riot police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse troublemakers who threw chunks of marble smashed off a metro station entrance and set rubbish bins on fire. Bus and ferry services have been disrupted, leaving some tourists stranded, in protests against planned pension and labour reforms. The industrial action is another in a series of mass-demonstrations against a swathe of severe austerity measures.

Violent Riots - Why Is This Time Different ?

When pondering the question as to whether we will have violence in the streets when the economic collapse intensifies, a look back at social, ecconomic and other similarities and differences from the first great depression provides an easy answer. The stigma to "look good" for others in society is gone. The want to produce proper manners and appearences have vanished. A look at Black Friday shoppers charging over shoppers shows the general sociatal condition on the country today. In contrast, during the Great Depression, there was a sence of helping your fellow man to get through it. People sacrificed for others. Now, our own family members will likely turn on us when it really gets bad. A letter from a viewer really points this fact out.

Gay rights march in Belgrade triggers violent riots

www.timesofearth.com BELGRADE - Violence has erupted during a gay-rights parade in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, after police deployed to protect the marchers clashed with anti-gay protesters, leaving scores of people injured. Protesters dressed mainly in black and with hooded tops hurled rocks and molotov cocktails at security forces who were trying to ensure the city's second ever Gay Pride event went ahead on Sunday. One official said that 90 police officers required medical attention and two had been seriously wounded in the violence. The riots spread to other parts of Belgrade as nationalists and skinheads attacked targets unrelated to the parade. At one point, rioters managed to set fire to the headquarters of Boris Tadic's Democratic Party (DS) in protest against the Serbian president's support for the march. The flames were quickly put out and no one was hurt. Dragan Sutanovac, Serbia's defence minister, said that "it's a really sad day for Serbia". Susanne Simon-Paunovic, a German married to a Serb who attended the rally, said: "It was more like death march. The atmosphere was terrible." The city's streets were sealed off by thousands of police officials as the march took place. Police said they had detained 101 people and that 53 of them would be investigated for "criminal act of violence. A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office said the state would seek "the toughest possible sentences" against those behind the violence. The parade was the first in ...

study for a riot

During 2010, Greece came under the supervision of IMF and EU. The fear of poverty and financial recession has built up a feeling of social unrest. Memories of the Greek riots of 2008, according to the media, have created the expectation in Greece and abroad, of a new, more violent riot. Influenced by this atmosphere, we created in a deserted ceramics factory in Athens a series of actions during May 2010. At the time we wanted to give form to feelings intuitively provoked by the signs of unrest we received from all around us. We used the objects that were plentifully scattered in the ruins of the factory: red powder, ceramics, wood and ropes. We installed sculptural structures and we recorded, on video, short collision-scenes. Red powder represented the outcome of every human violent act. The deserted industrial setting was used as a metaphor for the financially devastated country. The multiple-screens structure of the video is a reminder of the surveillance cameras used by the police. The sound was recorded live during each of the actions. We doubt the efficiency of violent rioting and search for a new way. Essentially we have found nothing yet, however, we enjoy searching.

Violent August: The 1918 Anti-Greek Riots in Toronto - Documentary Film

Watch the first 6 minutes of our documentary free! To order the DVD please visit www.violentaugust.com. On a hot August night, not all that long ago and for the next four consecutive nights the good citizens of Toronto went crazy and ignited the largest riot in the citys history and one of the largest anti-Greek riots in the world. Why did it happen? Why the Greeks? What were the consequences? Why, until now, has this incredible incident been forgotten? Incorporating detailed interviews with historians and family members of those affected, Violent August explores the causes of the riot and chronicles the events in detail. Using actual archival photos, newspaper reports and representational newsreel footage, the documentary brings the people, places and incidents vividly to life. Violent August reveals the social conditions and motives of the enraged WW1 veterans who started the riots and the position of the small community of Greek immigrants and restaurant operators who unwittingly became the lightening rod for the violence. The film provides a powerful and shocking example of how a festering climate of racism and resentment became a ticking time bomb primed to explode at the slightest provocation. --- Produced, Written and Directed by: John Burry Associate producer: Lynne Thorogood-Burry Edited by Pete Raekelboom FEATURING: Prof. Thomas Gallant, Chair, Modern Greek History, University of California San Diego Prof. Yiorgios Anagnostou, Associate Professor, Modern Greek ...
