Vivitar 810HD camcorder review
The Vivitar DVR 810HD is one of the least expensive "High Definition" digital camcorders on the market today, but is it a bargain buy or just cheap junk? I'd say it's half and half. The 810HD looks, feels, and operates like a "real" camcorder costing hundreds more, but the video and audio quality are poor at best. The lower-res modes deliver about the same results as recording video on a low-end digital still photo camera (or even a good cell phone camera), and although "HD" mode does record at 1280x720 "720P" resolution, the image is pixellated and the unusually low 20 frames per second recording delivers smeary, jittery motion (a sample of this "HD" footage will be featured in my next video). I would only recommend this camcorder for children, so they can learn how a "real" digital flash memory camcorder operates, with its various manual controls (exposure, white balance, ISO speeds, etc.), without the expense of buying a "real" camcorder and then worrying about it getting lost or broken. The 810HD's low-tech MJPEG files can be easily edited with any version of Windows Movie Maker or iMovie and then uploaded to YouTube, such as I did to create this video. But if you are just looking for a good inexpensive camcorder, spend a little bit more and get a model from a known brand with good reviews, such as the pocket-size Kodak Zi6 which is now commonly on sale for under $100. PowerGenix NiZn Review Test with Vivitar 285HV strobe & SANYO eneloop and 2700 batteries
Buy NiZn batteries here: amzn.to Here was a quick little test I threw together after reading soo much about the PowerGenix NiZn AA Batteries. I have read good things and bad things about them.. Good things They have about 30% more capacity than NiMH runs at 1.6 V instead of 1.2 which should provide faster recycle times with a flash GREEN!!! NiZn batteries use no heavy/toxic metals (mercury, lead or cadmium), or metal hydrides (rare earth metals) that are difficult to recycle. Both nickel and zinc are commonly occurring elements in nature and are not very hazardous. Zinc and nickel can be fully recycled. - ( wikipedia.org quote ) They actually weight LESS than a NiMH battery Bad things You wont get as many flashes out of these batteries. You NEED to buy their own special charger i recommend going with the 1 hour charger its very inexpensive and comes with 4 AA batteries. Some say they might be too powerful and if you pop your flash too many times in a row they will actually cause your flash to either over heat of just break/malfunction. I setup my vivitar 285HV and tested the PowerGenix NiZn Batteries along with the Sanyo Eneloops 2000 mAh AA batteries and the Sanyo 2700 mAh AA batteries. Check the video for the results of the recycle time on the flash. I will still need to spend more time with these batteries to see if the fear of over heating or breaking your flash is possible but I would say like anything else don't be a crazy strobist popping full power flashes just <b>...</b>

The 1/8" is a much more secure connection than a PC sync which is on the metal hot shoe I added to the Vivitar. Bell & Howell, Polaroid, Vivitar, AgfaPhoto, and Toshiba camcorders: famous name, but poor quality!
A number of brands famous for making good quality film cameras decades ago are now putting their name on new digital camcorders. But buyer beware! These are really just cheap, generic Chinese-made camcorders, which you can often find sold under all sorts of no-name brands like DigiLife, Jazz, DXG, Speed, etc. The same is true of camcorders sold under the name of a fancy gift store (The Sharper Image, Hammacher Schlemmer) or the name of a brand that is famous but not known for making camcorders at all (Toshiba, Gateway). Just because you see a famous brand name that was once well respected, doesn't mean that it is a good quality product!

This camera is an economically friendly device great for a beginners or people wanting a camera for a good price. I wouldn't say that is records at 720p as advertised but, for the price, it's not a bad camera.

raw footage shot with the Vivitar 850 Waterproof camera. Loaded it into Imovie and exported it down. Just wanted to see the quality test. not bad considering it is a 100 dollar camera you can buy at Walmart. Sorry for shaking the camera so bad. This would be a really cool little gadget to go snorkeling with. You'll get the best results from this camera in bright light. I shot this on a pretty sunny day. Its a quite nice lens to use on a crop frame cause you can stand much close than using a 50mm only its not as fast as most 50mm but its is one of the faster 28mm lenses. Only con of the lens is that you have to turn the focus ring 270 degrees to go from one end to the other.

testing new camcorder, vivitar 510N bought from staples for $50. revised comments. I've just glued on some 1/4 20 nuts for a tripod mount and will be using this more often in the daytime. will get a 4GB card to see if it works and will update. OK, just tried a Transcend 4GB SDHC card, it's class 2 and it works fine in the vivitar. I think 4GB is the limit per the manual in Bright sunlight the black hole appears when shooting at the sun.
Vivitar 810HD camcorder "HD" test
Sample video of "HD" recording on the Vivitar DVR 810HD camcorder, uploaded directly from the camera's flash memory drive. It encodes the video as 1280x720 "720P" MJPEG at 20 frames per second (yes, 20!) but a close-up look at the footage reveals obvious pixellation, so the actual resolution is not really "HD" at all. And as you can see, the slow 20 fps rate leads to smeary, blurry footage during any kind of fast motion. Its microphone did not pick up much of the outdoors ambience (birds chirping, etc.) but yet overmodulated my voice. Overall, if you want *real* HD video at a budget price, get a Kodak Zi6 on sale for $99.99, or maybe even the Best Buy Insignia HD camcorder at that price.
