Video of Iceland volcano eruption, giant ash clouds from Grimsvotn

Iceland's imposed a flight ban and closed its main airport after the country's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, erupted. It lies under the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland and has been dormant for 7 years. A large plume of smoke and ash is stretching 20 km into the air. Iceland's Meteorological Office says that the eruption at the Grimsvotn volcano has been accompanied by a series of small earthquakes. Scientists have been expecting a new eruption and have said previously that this volcano's eruption will likely be small and should not lead to the air travel chaos caused in April 2010 by ash from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano. Thousands face volcanic ash UK flight delays - BBC BREAKFAST - May 24, 2011

Hundreds of passengers face UK flight cancellations because of drifting ash from an Icelandic volcanic eruption. BA, KLM, Aer Lingus and Easyjet are among the airlines that have chosen to suspend services in and out of Scotland for the coming hours. But Ryanair has objected to an order from Irish officials to ground its morning flights to and from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen on safety grounds. It said it would be complaining about the "unnecessary cancellations". A statement on Ryanair's website read: "Ryanair strongly object to this decision and believe that there is no basis for these flight cancellations and will be meeting with the [Irish Aviation Authority] on Tuesday morning to have this restriction on Ryanair flights removed as a matter of urgency." The cancellations come just over a year after another volcanic eruption in Iceland caused widespread disruption across Europe, including the closure of UK airspace, amid concerns about the damage volcanic ash could cause to engine aircraft. This year, in the UK, the decision on whether to fly or not in ash cloud conditions is down to individual airlines, although they have to apply to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for final approval. The transport secretary said the UK was "better" prepared than it had been in 2010. Philip Hammond told BBC Two's Newsnight there were now "much more robust systems" in place to "minimise the disruptive effect" and there was now a better understanding of the risk from ash clouds ...

Air Chaos Time? Iceland volcano ash cloud grounds flights... again

The ash cloud from the erupting Icelandic volcano is causing further disruption to air travel as it sweeps over Europe. More than 200 delays and cancellations have been reported in parts of Scandinavia, Ireland and Scotland, while a threat hangs over services in England. It follows Saturday's eruption of Iceland's most active volcano - the largest in 100 years. The ash in the atmosphere affects visibility and can clog engines, making it too dangerous to fly. Fears remain there'll be a repeat of last year's travel chaos - when a different Icelandic eruption closed much of Europe's airspace for a time.

Volcano Alert: Smoke & ash block visibility, disrupt transport in Japan

Smoke and ash continued to spew from the Shinmoedake volcano in southern Japan on Thursday as local officials raised the alert level and banned residents from going within a two kilometre (1.2 miles) radius of the mountain in the Kogoshima Prefecture. There was a small eruption from Shinmoedake on Wednesday with the plume of smoke reaching as high as 1500 metres (4920 feet) at one point, which distributed volcanic ash across surrounding villages. The persistent ash has blocked visibility in the surrounding area and has made the roads slippery and treacherous for motorists, according to local officials. Train services in the area were suspended and flights to the area were cancelled on Thursday. So far no damage or injuries have been reported. Test flights through Iceland volcano ash cloud successful

The massive volcanic ash cloud that's brought European air travel to a virtual standstill, has stranded an estimated 32000 people hoping to travel to or from Russia. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered emergency measures to deal with the unprecedented crisis. The Dutch airline KLM and Germany's Lufthansa have carried out test flights through the ash cloud. They reported no damage to their aircraft, however air space in around 20 countries remains closed, affecting millions of people's travel plans. Forecasters believe disruption's likely to continue for several more days as light prevailing winds are failing to clear the cloud. The volcano in the south of Iceland began erupting on Wednesday, sending plumes of ash several kilometres into the air. Scientists have warned it could trigger a chain-reaction in other volcanoes in the country.

Professor David Spiegelhalter: Communicating risk and uncertainty

Perception of risk can be influenced by the choice of words, numbers and pictures. Preferences and understanding varies among people, which suggests the use of multiple presentations including comparators and interactive animations. Communicating 'deeper' uncertainties, in the face of explicit and implicit ignorance, is more tricky. And it's important to bear in mind that people's reactions to risk narratives are likely to be dominated by their cultural world-view. This lecture looked at examples of communication of sensitive topics, from statins to swine flu, climate change to volcanic ash.

Iceland volcano spitting lava and smoke, less ash after eruption

Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano continues to spew clouds of smoke and lava almost ten days since the April 14 eruption. However, there's less ash created, since there is no longer water from melting glaciers surrounding it. European air traffic is also returning to normal after the disruption caused by the massive volcanic ash cloud.

The volcanic ash cloud from Iceland (With Subtitles)

The cascade of cancellations continued Sunday as an Icelandic volcano poured out dust clouds four miles high, snarling international travel and stranding tens of thousands of passengers at airports across the world. It's the worst disruption of air traffic since the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001. Following those attacks, the United States closed its air space for three days, forcing Europe to postpone all transatlantic flights. The volcanic ash Sunday forced numerous world leaders to cancel plans to travel to Poland for the funeral of President Lech Kaczynski. "We're into the third day of this; there is no sign of this abating," analyst Jamie Bowden said on Saturday. "It may go on into the middle of next week, and it's going to get more difficult before it gets better." Still, a test flight carried out Saturday evening by the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines seemed to offer some hope. The flight, conducted in Netherlands airspace, found that the air quality in the atmosphere met the requirements for safe flight, said Peter Hartman, president and CEO. The airline used a Boeing 737-800 that flew to its maximum operating altitude of 41000 feet (approximately 13000 meters). KLM expects to receive the final results of the technical inspection Sunday morning. If the results hold, the airline will ask for permission to resume its operations. For now, however, airports in at least 15 countries were closed -- flights canceled to avoid ash that can cause jet ...

Volcano Hysteria: OVER-reaction to ash cloud?

A handful of flights are now running from European airports after some airspace was reopened. This follows five days of inactivity caused by the spread of volcanic ash from Iceland. Planes have been taking off from major cities across Europe - however many flights remain cancelled. According to meteorologists, the skies over Europe begin to clear as the volcano ash cloud was pushed away from European airspace. However, the situation for the UK looks gloomy as recent weather reports suggest the ash cloud is returning to British air space. Volcanic ash has left hundreds of thousands of people trapped in airports putting the aviation industry in meltdown. But as the airspace slowly starts to reopen, the question is raised by many if the reaction to the ash cloud was indeed an OVER-reaction. RT's Gayane Chichakyan investigates.
