Video Revolution from W3C: Video Codec Must Be Free.....and Mozilla and Opera are (Nearly) Ready Just as software for putting still images on a web page is free, so should codecs for encoding and decoding video, said Philippe Le Hegaret, Architect Domain Leader at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3) headed by Tim Berners-Lee. Video encoding, the essential process in which video is compressed, converted and then decoded for the Web, is patented by entities including Fraunhofer, Futjisu, Sony, The Trustees of Columbia University, Microsoft and Hitachi. These groups license software, called codecs, to be used in various formats including Flash, WMV, MPEG 4 and Silverlight. Information on this can be found at MPEG LA. The W3C advocates a revolutionary idea: the availability of a royalty-free encoding technology so anyone can create video without having to pay. An open-source, free codec called Theora, is about to get wide visibility with its emergence on the latest versions of the Mozilla and Opera browsers, where it is in very early Alpha. PC Week reported on this Friday with a story from Jeremy Kirk. Theora is an evolved version of an early On2 codec, VP3, which was released by the company for the open source community. It has been developed by Xiph. Philippe is not sure that Theora is the answer to royalty-free encoding as there are complex patent law issues, but it's an important development, he says. October 7, 2011 - Xichang Satellite Launch Center. China's Long March-III2 rocket carrier sent a French-made telecom satellite into orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center Friday afternoon, marking the first time for China to provide launch service for a European satellite operator. It was also the 148th launch for the Long March rocket family. According to information and data received by the Xi'an Satellite Measuring and Monitoring Center, the satellite and rocket carrier separated on schedule and the satellite is now in orbit. The launch marked the first time for China to cooperate with a European satellite operator since the signing of a Sino-French satellite launch agreement in 2008. The launch was carried out by the China Great Wall Industry Corporation and the China Institute of Rocket Carrier Technology, both under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, as well as the China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General (CLTC). The W3C telecom satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space, a French satellite manufacturer, and is owned by Eutelsat, a leading provider of satellite communication services. The W3C has a designed lifespan of 15 years and will provide television, radio, broadband, video and Internet service.

Doug Schepers of the W3C gave an overview talk about W3C and Web standards at the Web Directions South 2009 conference in Sydney, Australia, see south09.webdirections.org . This is a short extract from his talk, where he announces that Twitter has bought the W3C. Awesomeness warning! Doug sent me a transcript: (Can you hear me all right?) So, I just wanted to introduce you to W3C, and to do so, I have some exciting information: W3C has been acquired by Twitter. We're really excited about this... there are... there are a couple of complications. All of our specifications are now going to have to be 140 characters or less. But we think this will actually speed up our time to market. I'd like to introduce 2 new specifications: here is HTML5 and CSS3. So, we've cut out everything except the essential bits: border-radius will now let you have rounded corners... so, um, congratulations. And we expect that these will be implemented very quickly. BARCELONA MOON TEAM China Launches European W3C Satellite
On October 7th, members of the Barcelona Moon Team had the chance to witness the launch of a Long March 3B from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the province of Sichuan in China. The rocket was carrying a very special payload, the W3C satellite owned by Eutelsat, which become the first European owned satellite to be launched on a Chinese rocket. W3C is based on the Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000 platform and it's the fifth satellite built by Thales Alenia Space France launched by China. The launch was impressive with the LM3B roaring to the skies with a slow and smooth movement in the begining but disapearing from the naked eye view in a few seconds. A beautiful show. HTML5 Video is Not Ready for the Web, W3C's Le Hegaret
www.beet.tv CAMBRIDGE, Mass -- Despite the growing demand for HTML5, and its deployment by many big online players, its commercial introduction is premature as there is no standard for the new technology, says Philippe Le Hegaret, leader of effort at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to establish standards for HTML and SVG. This lack of standardization will create problems interoperability as publishers embrace different implementations. Le Hegaret's warnings about the early adoption of HTML5 was reported last week in Info World. In an interview earlier last week in his office on the MIT campus, Le Hagaret told Beet.TV that a standard for HTML5 is a work in progress, being done in concert with many in technology companies. By May 2011, he expects to to get final recommendations on standards. While he says that some implementations work well, notably for mobile devices (we assume he is referring to Apple), the lack of standardization around HTML for devices is also a problem. The issue is starting to make waves in the developer community, with engineers at Facebook pushing back on the W3C' s caution about standardization, reported Stephen Shankland at CNET earlier this week. In addition to the lack of standardization and its related issues, he addressed some issues about privacy and the problems created with HTML5 content downloaded to a desktop.
