Westphalia Waltz (Olde Tyme Fiddle tune made famous by Cotton Collins c1946)
This is actually a very old French tune from nearly 300 years ago that made its way to Germany and then during WW2 a fellow by the name of Cotton Collins a fiddler from the US, who was with Hank Thompson and the Lone Star Playboys, took this tune back home with him in his head and refined this old waltz and gave it new life in the 1940s while at a dance in Wesphalia, Texas. According to an awesome write-up by Clay Coppedge on the website www.texasescapes.com Coppedge tells that ...After a dance at Westphalia Hall in 1946, the band met with hall manager BJ Lignau to divvy up the evening's proceeds. Collins mentioned the crowd sure like his 'No Name Waltz.' Lignau said that since the song had no name, he might as well call it 'Westphalia Waltz.' So thats what he did and it became a number one hit released on Bluebonnet Records. Here I managed to chord along on the guitar and play second fiddle too...tricky...lol, but cool after a million trys!!

After re-recording the mandolin version of this tune, I thought it would be fun to do it as a guitar solo - so here it is. I've upped the tempo a little to give it more swing - something akin to the feel of a Viennese waltz - and capo'ed it up to A with a G voicing to give it a brighter sound. I've played it through three times, with a close-up on the fretting hand in the middle chorus. www.mjra.net

Westphalia Waltz - mandolin & guitar
I first recorded this on mandolin some time ago - just after I'd first learned it - which was too soon. Looked at it recently and didn't like it so I've re-recorded it again after playing it many, many times since then. New tunes can be so tantalising sometimes that I just want to get my own take on them down on record as soon as possible! A little patience is sometimes required... "Westphalia Waltz" is an old-timey type waltz, though I'm sure its origins are probably in Europe. I was brought to this tune by the wonderful playing of Stephen Bennett on harp-guitar - which you should watch on YouTube - sublime! Our topic in co-operation with the Handelsblatt. Many small to medium-sized businesses are based in the western German state of North Rhine Westphalia and one was awarded a prize for being the best employer in this sector in 2008: Mennekes from Kirchhundem in the Sauerland region. Walter Menneke's father Aloys invented the electric lighter after World War Two when matches were in short supply. His son took the business in a different direction, building up the company over the last 30 years into the world leader for industrial plugs. The firm offers more than 11000 different plug systems, has a sales network in 90 countries, an annual turnover of almost 100 million euros and bases in Saxony and China. Sixty year-old Walter Menneke still has big expansion plans. In August this year, he opened a second factory in Nanjing, China and he would also like a slice of the multi-billion Panama project. He cultivates a socially-responsible, fatherly image and wants to continue as the states leader in a coalition with the free-market, liberal FDP after May 9.That will not be easy in what is traditionally a Social Democrat bastion and former industrial region going through transformation. Rüttgers knows if he loses, it will also be a defeat for the conservative-free market coalition on the federal level in Berlin, because it would lose its majority in the Bundesrat, the house of parliament that represents the states.

The founding members were Marian Gold (real name Hartwig Schierbaum, born May 26, 1954 in Herford), Bernhard Lloyd (real name Bernhard Gößling, born June 6, 1960 in Enger, North Rhine-Westphalia), and Frank Mertens (real name Frank Sorgatz, born October 26, 1961 in Enger, North Rhine-Westphalia). The band was at first named Forever Young before changing to Alphaville. They are best known for their two biggest hits, "Big in Japan" and "Forever Young".

Germany: Impressions of the Rur Eifel
The Rur - not to be confused with the Ruhr — is a river which flows through parts of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. It is a right (eastern) tributary to the river Meuse. About 90% of the river is in Germany. The Rur rises in the Hautes Fagnes/Hohes Venn National Park, near the 696 meter-tall Signal de Botrange in Belgium at an altitude of 660m. South of Monschau it flows into Germany, through North Rhine-Westphalia. It flows first through the northern part of the Eifel hills. After 39 km it reaches the Rur Reservoir (Rurstausee), the second-largest artificial lake in Germany. The Rur Dam (Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel) is a 77.2 metre high dam located in the southwestern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It was built in 1939 and impounds the River Rur to form the Rur Reservoir (Rurstausee or Rursee) which is 7.83 km² in area. It lies within the districts of Aachen and Düren. Heimbach is located on the river Rur, in the Eifel hills, approx. 20 km south of Düren. Heimbach is the city with the smallest number of residents in North Rhine-Westphalia. Heimbach is a popular town for tourists. The most important objects of interest are the National Parc Eifel, the power house built in style of Art Nouveau, the water supply dam of Rur, the monastery of Mariawald and Hengebach castle. Westbam @ Rosenmontagsrave 2002. Westbam AKA Maximilian Lenz www.westbam.de www.myspace.com www.discogs.com Maximilian Lenz, the brother of Fabian Lenz (DJ Dick) was born on 4 March 1965 in Münster, Westphalia. Not only is he Germany's most successful and most popular DJ and avantgardist of the Raving Society, he is also the most innovative producer and co-founder of Berlin's Indie Dance label, Low Spirit Recordings. WestBam is in fact the abbreviated form of Westphalia BamBaataa and derives from this artist's home state in Germany and his role model Afrika Bambaataa. 1983 marked the beginning of his DJ career in the Odeon Club in Münster. In 1984 he made a permanent move to Berlin which was still divided by the Wall. WestBam started as DJ at Berlin's famous Metropol and his sophisticated mixing techniques brought him fame far beyond the borders of the divided city. In 1985 WestBam worked with Klaus Jankuhn to produce his first 12" entitled "17" which was inspired by Paul Hardcastle's "19". In 1989 he made his first album "The Cabinet". This was the first DJ-concept album to be launched on the German market.
