Sailing instructor Ralph Mothes and his partner Paloma Werner of Cape town Sailing Academy were sailing the yacht "Intrepid" off the coast of Cape Town when they spotted the whale breaching out of the water some distance away. Suddenly it got close to them, leaped out of the water and crashed onto their yacht.

A breaching Southern Right Whale landed on top of a ten meter long sail boat off the coast of South Africa on Sunday. The remarkable photos below were shot by a passenger on a nearby boat. Fortunately no one was hurt on the sailboat and the whale swam away without apparent injury. The sailboat however was considerably worse for the encounter. credit liveleak.com
Blue whales surround and dive under a sailboat on Santa Monica Bay. On Labor Day 2010 there were 200 blue whales in our local waters. We went for a day sail and heard them vocalize (but that's another video). Then we went out again that evening, and with sails up but no wind, were just bobbing in the water when we were approached by three giant blue whales. One went off to the side, two of them stopped just short of our hull -- giant noses pressed against us -- and then dove under our hull and keel. They were enormous! The action was filmed by Stephen Graziano first and then by Charlie Bisherat who was at the beam with his iphone. After we put down the camera and had a stiff drink, another blue whale breached 3 ft. from our bow, and then another "spyhopped", sticking his (or her) enormous noggin out of the water to take a look at us. I (the hysterical woman in the video) was the only one who saw it. I couldn't speak. The whale and I just stared at each other until he sunk back down into the blue. It was truly the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me. We've been "whale watching" onboard our sailboat Windfall (336 Hunter) since, but haven't come close to replicating the magic of that night. I hope you enjoy our video!

A South African couple and their sailing instructor had the fright of their lives, over the weekend, when a Southern Right Whale jumped onto the deck of their boat while they were sailing off the coast of Cape Town. (July 22)
AMAZING reworked video clip that shows in GREAT detail where the whale bolts up from the sea and hits the yacht. Stunning! A Southern RIght Whale jumped up from the sea, as they often do, but most unexpectedly landed on the sailboat Intrepid, in the ocean a bit north of Cape Town, S-Africa. Amazingly, someone caught a video clip from a nearby boat, and this is a reworking of it, done independently, where the collision is stabilized and also zoomed into to show the details! The whale that smashed down on the boat is believed to have weighted 40 tons! The two man crew, Ms. Paloma Werner and Mr Ralph Mothes, were unharmed after the incident.

North Pacific Humpback Whale breaching off of the coast of the Coronado Islands, in San Diego CA. For at least 10 minutes and sometimes 50 ft. off of the bow, this North Pacific Humpback Whale breached the water over and over today, April 10th 2011. These video clips were recorded by Darla Salmond from sailing vessel Northlight, Darla and her husband Bob, are members of the Southwestern Yacht Club Point Loma, CA. "This whale was so close I had to zoom out the camera to get all of him in the shot. At the end we thought he might bump the boat and I was literally hanging off the bow. Every time he came down we could feel his splash rock the boat. Unquestionably one of the most life-changing events my heart was pounding the whole time."

It doesn't belong to me.!! A surfer and kayakers got quite a surprise when two humpback whales lunged out of the water and nearly came crashing down upon them near Santa Cruz, California. Barbara Roettger, the woman who shot the video, told ABC News that the group was about a quarter mile from shore when the whales surfaced. Roettger was only 20 feet away from encounter. According to ABC News, "scientists believe weather patterns have driven fish closer to shore this year and brought the feeding whales with them." The surprising encounter captured in the video is not the first one in the waters near Santa Cruz. The Associated Press reports that the US Coast Guard has been monitoring a pod of humpbacks that have come within a mile of shore looking for food. Roettger admitted that whale encounters like hers can be dangerous. "We were crazy to be out there, " she told ABC News. "You're a sitting duck, basically." Officials are concerned for human safety, especially for kayakers and boaters who try to get a closer look at the creatures. No human injuries have been reported, but "at least one sailboat was damaged this week when it struck a whale." As for the whales, many groups have spoken out against boats coming too close to the mammals. Whaling, an historically lucrative business around the world, has come under increasing scrutiny in recent decades. We said our good byes to Nana Marie this weekend in Santa Cruz, California. It started out cloudy but once we left the dock the clouds cleared up and the sun shined!
