Whales Surprise Surfer Near Santa Cruz, California Beach (VIDEO)

It doesn't belong to me.!! A surfer and kayakers got quite a surprise when two humpback whales lunged out of the water and nearly came crashing down upon them near Santa Cruz, California. Barbara Roettger, the woman who shot the video, told ABC News that the group was about a quarter mile from shore when the whales surfaced. Roettger was only 20 feet away from encounter. According to ABC News, "scientists believe weather patterns have driven fish closer to shore this year and brought the feeding whales with them." The surprising encounter captured in the video is not the first one in the waters near Santa Cruz. The Associated Press reports that the US Coast Guard has been monitoring a pod of humpbacks that have come within a mile of shore looking for food. Roettger admitted that whale encounters like hers can be dangerous. "We were crazy to be out there, " she told ABC News. "You're a sitting duck, basically." Officials are concerned for human safety, especially for kayakers and boaters who try to get a closer look at the creatures. No human injuries have been reported, but "at least one sailboat was damaged this week when it struck a whale." As for the whales, many groups have spoken out against boats coming too close to the mammals. Whaling, an historically lucrative business around the world, has come under increasing scrutiny in recent decades. According to the Associated Press, Japan still catches a small number of whales annually, in a "research program opposed by ...

Migaloo the White Whale Speaks

songlinesofthewhales.org We present to you the voice of Migaloo, the White Whale. We thought it appropriate that Migaloo be granted the opportunity to speak before the meeting of the International Whaling Commission. As speakers are allowed only a few minutes to present their case, we extracted only the most poignant statements from our 1998 recording of Migaloo's two hour discourse. 'Migaloo' means 'White Fella'. He was named by Australian Aboriginal Elders. The images are highlights from close extended pod encounters between 1988 and 2008. For images of Migaloo, please view the encounter as narrated by our intern Dave Williams youtu.be ''One of the great thrills of my life was hearing and feeling Migaloo's voice pass through my body as he swam past The Oceania Project's research vessel on October 2, 1998.'' ~Dave Williams The song is constant. We record 24/7. The song never ceases. The whales create this soundscape, we feel, to give solace to the newborn in the hours of darkness. In the dark of night, in the deep ocean, only the stars and the song bring hope for the dawn. We present to you a 12 minute extract of this 2 hour recording of Migaloo the White Whale's song we recorded in 1998: bit.ly The Whales each sing the identical 12 to 24 minute cycle, although they each commence the cycle at different intervals. Medras-Killing The Whales

MUSIC By medras Album: In Your Myth B Sides Label: Kraak Rec. This song was written after watching a documentary about whaling and what really happening. All videos comes from the internet , do your research and help the whales to exist more on this planet . Japan has killed 8201 minke whales in the Antarctic for "scientific purposes" since the moratorium in 1986. A total of 840 whales were killed by Japan under special permit during the 31 years before the moratorium1. Japan took a total of 866 whales in 2006/07 season: 3 Southern Hemisphere fin whales, 508 Southern Hemisphere minke whales, 197 North Pacific minke whales, 51 North Pacific Brydes whales, 101 North Pacific sei whales, 6 North Pacific sperm whales.2 The 2005/06 season was the first time Japan had taken fin whales, an endangered species. Japan have previously announced that in the 2007-08 they will increase their take of fin whales to 50, and also take 50 humpback whales as part of their "scientific whaling" programme.

"Whale Wars: Viking Shores" another Sea Shepherd failure

Discovery Channel Animal Planet's "Whale Wars: Viking Shores" is about Sea Shepherd's visit to the Faroe Islands in 2011. - Sea Shepherd went there to stop whale hunting that did not happen. She Shepherd attempted to engage in a confrontation with the locals and that too never happened. Animal Planet and Sea Shepherd were failures in trying to get dramatic video from the good people of the Faroe Islands. The descendants of the Vikings in the Faroe Islands knew what Animal Planet and Sea Shepherd were up to, that they needed dramatic video for their cable channel television show. Sea Shepherd's numerous attempts to initiate a confrontation were met with failure as the good people of the Faroe Islands did not cooperate by not participating. Also the whales that are so intelligent did not cooperate with Sea Shepherd by not swimming into the Faroe Islands to provide free food. Below is a link to Whale Wars trailer about the show and it is absolutely amazing for its honesty. They used video footage over twenty years old because newer confrontational video does not exists. The trailer shows Sea Shepherd engaged in terrorist activities by firing rockets at the Faroe police. Proving they are indeed terrorist. They even mention in the trailer that the whales the Faroese harvest are pilot whales that are NOT endangered and have been harvested by the Faroese for over a thousand years. The trailer's narrator provided information and details that support the people of the Faroe ...

What's Killing Blue Whales?

This trip was kindly supported by Singapore Airlines Credits Video: Mazdak and Donald Edit: Mazdak Narration: Josh Music: Chromatics - Tick of the Clock The southern tip of Sri Lanka is home to the world's largest colony of resident blue whales. Tragically, one of the busiest international shipping lanes crosses the habitat of these endangered behemoths. This causes unnecessary and avoidable excess mortality that is likely to be hard to sustain for this population. The problem can be reduced by slowing ships or moving the shipping lane further out to sea. This is a very simple solution that has been to proven to work in the US where blue whale population started to thrive after implementation. Raising awareness can help accelerate protection of Sri Lankan blue whales that will also be beneficial to local communities who depend on eco-tourism. Whaling in Faroe Islands, grindadrap

Read description before making any claims! Video: The whaling in Faroe Islands told from a former activist who was against the so called brutality in the slaughter of pilot whales. Sea Shepherd said that they saved hundreds of whales in the time they were in Faroe Islands. They said compared to 2010 where several hundred whales were slaughtered in the months they were here, they saved many whales. The question is, why didn't he compare to 2008 where no whales were slaughtered all year long? or 2009 where no whales were slaughtered between end of mai to end of august? Facts about the whaling in Faroe Islands. 1 - The whaling is not commercial, the meat is not sold to the people and is distributed free 2 - The whalers do not go out and hunt the whales, they drive them into the fjords close to a beach or similar, and then men from the beach go out and slaughter them. 3 - it is NOT a rite of passage for young people like environmentalists want you to believe. 4 - The slaugther is taken seriously, and they want to kill the whales as quickly as possible. 5 - Newer methods are being developed so that the kill can be as quick as possible. 6 - The number of whales slaughtered can be registered all the way back to 1709 7 - The number of whales slaughtered a year varies a lot, since they do not hunt the whales, it all depends if the whales swim into the fjords or between islands, and that is very random.

Whale Fish Near Karachi Pakistan Sea

Whale (origin Old English hwæl) is the common name for various marine mammals of the order Cetacea.[1] The term whale sometimes refers to all cetaceans, but more often it excludes dolphins and porpoises,[2] which belong to suborder Odontoceti (toothed whales). This suborder also includes the sperm whale, killer whale, pilot whale, and beluga whale. The other Cetacean suborder Mysticeti (baleen whales) are filter feeders that eat small organisms caught by straining seawater through a comblike structure found in the mouth called baleen. This suborder includes the blue whale, the humpback whale, the bowhead whale and the minke whale. All Cetacea have forelimbs modified as fins, a tail with horizontal flukes, and nasal openings (blowholes) on top of the head. Whales range in size from the blue whale, the largest animal known to have ever existed[3] at 30 m (98 ft) and 180 tonnes (180 long tons; 200 short tons), to various pygmy species, such as the pygmy sperm whale at 3.5 m (11 ft). Whales collectively inhabit all the world's oceans and number in the millions, with annual population growth rate estimates for various species ranging from 3% to 13%.[4] For centuries, whales have been hunted for meat and as a source of raw materials. By the middle of the 20th century, however, industrial whaling had left many species seriously endangered, leading to the end of whaling in all but a few countries.

'Whale Wars' Anti-Whale-Hunting Activist Held by German Court

A marine conservationist renowned for disrupting whale hunts appeared in court in Germany on Monday (May 14) facing extradition to Costa Rica over charges arising from a confrontation with a ship that was fishing for sharks. Marine activist group Sea Shepherd said Paul Watson, its 61-year-old leader, faced extradition to answer "violation of ships traffic" charges stemming from the incident a decade ago. Sea Shepherd said the group had discovered an illegal shark finning operation, run by a Costa Rican ship called the Varadero. The practice involves fishing sharks, slicing off their fins and tossing the sharks back into the sea, sometimes barely alive. The crew of the Varadero accused the Sea Shepherd crew of trying to kill them, while the organization said it had video to disprove the claim. Speaking during an unrelated Sea Shepherd trip in January this year, Watson expressed his anger over the whaling methods used by a Japanese fleet. "The real eco-terrorists are people who are going down there and targeting endangered whales in an established international whale sanctuary in violation of an international moratorium on whaling, and now they're burning heavy fuel below 60, which is also a violation of international law. These people are criminals," he said. He will remain in custody until Wednesday (May 16), pending a further court decision, his lawyer,Oliver Wallasch, told Reuters television. The alleged confrontation took place in Guatemalan waters in 2002.

Japanese whalers clash with US activists - Whaling in Japan

Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd says Japanese whalers are ''the real eco-terrorists'' after their vessels clash on the high seas. Whaling in Japan may have begun as early as the 12th century. During the 20th century, Japan was heavily involved in commercial whaling until the International Whaling Commission moratorium on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Japan continued to hunt whales using the scientific research provision in the agreement, and Japanese whaling is currently conducted by the Institute of Cetacean Research. The meat from this scientific whale hunts is then sold in shops and restaurants. This is allowed under IWC rules, although most IWC members oppose it. These hunts are a source of conflict between pro- and anti-whaling countries and organizations. Nations, scientists and environmental organizations opposed to whaling consider the Japanese research program to be unnecessary at best and a thinly disguised commercial whaling operation at worst. Japan maintains that annual whaling is sustainable and necessary for scientific study and management of whale stocks. Japan also argues that objections to whaling are based upon cultural differences and emotional anthropomorphism. Presented by www.howdodat.com

Humpback Whale songs

Humpback Whale songs provided by nature, video of humpback whales provided by aquaticadventures.com Music: Where Sky Meets Sea by Kendra Springer creativecommons.org For eons the song of the humpbacks could be heard in the oceans of the world, today their numbers are dwindling and I hope it's not final curtain call for the Humpback Whale songs. The estimations of the current population vary widely: some speak of 5000-7000 animals, and others of 12000-14000 animals. Even if there were 14000 animals, that would only be a fraction of the originally estimated population of approximately 115000 animals. The humpback whale's existence is, therefore, considered endangered. They received full protection by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1963, but are still hunted illegally. Currently there are many efforts being made to save these animals.

Save the Whales

Commercial whaling nearly wiped out every species of large whales in the 20th century. International whaling regulations were ignored or ineffective. As a result, many species remain endangered today. In 1986 the International Whaling Commission established a moratorium on commercial whaling. Iceland, Norway, and Japan continue to defy the whaling ban. Since the moratorium began, these nations have killed over 25000 more whales, including endangered species. You can help to stop them. The Facts: The blue whale is the largest animal species to have ever inhabited the Earth. The global population prior to human predation has been estimated at 350000 individuals. Today that number is ~10000. Blue whales inhabit every ocean but one of the largest subpopulations is the Northeast Pacific group. These whales transit four favored areas: the California Bight (south of Point Conception,) the west coast of Baja California, the Sea of Cortez, and the Costa Rica Dome. By far the largest number of blue whales congregates in the California Bight between June and October where food availability is very high. This area is also one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, with over 6000 cargo ships/year transiting the Santa Barbara Channel to and from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
