McNichols & Wyoming Ave. area, moved to Oak Park, Michigan when he was 10 years old, later acquiring the nickname "Royce" during highschool after wearing a Turkish link chain with an R pendant resembling the Rolls Royce symbol. He began rapping at 18, influenced mainly by Ras Kass and Redman. He signed his first deal in 1998 with Tommy Boy Records, after Tommy Boy Records shut down, he signed a deal with Columbia Records where he started recording an album called Rock City, referring to Detroit's former status as home to Motown Records. When the project was heavily bootlegged, Royce left the label for Koch Records to re-record some of the album, eventually releasing it in 2002 as Rock City (Version 2.0). While the album didn't sell very well, the DJ Premier-produced single "Boom" gained 5'9" some underground recognition and eventually resulted in the two working together more closely. Through his manager, Royce was introduced to Eminem at a show in 1997, and the two formed a working relationship; they formed up as a duo, Bad Meets Evil, and released several tracks together. Royce appeared on Eminem's debut studio album The Slim Shady LP, in which he was featured on a song called "Bad Meets Evil". It sold moderately well enough to justify Elektra Records clearing the way for 1992's Mecca and the Soul Brother LP. As a producer, DJ Pete Rock (Peter Phillips) tended to prefer obscure soul and jazz sides for sample sources, frequently making use of horn-driven hooks. Non Phixion's Myspace: www.myspace.com Get Non Phixion's Music: www.discogs.com Non Phixion (pronounced "non-fiction") was a New York-based hardcore hip-hop group consisting of members Ill Bill, Goretex, Sabac Red, and DJ Eclipse. In late 1994, MC Serch (of 3rd Bass fame) took his protege Sabac and teamed him up with DJ Eclipse and Ill Bill, thereby creating the group known as Non Phixion. Within six months Goretex, a childhood friend of Ill Bill, had joined the crew after freestyling for MC Serch. Six months later they had released their first single, "Legacy". It went on to sell over 10000 copies worldwide. MC Serch secured the group a deal with major label Geffen Records. Serch used half of the advance to build a studio for the group, but faced with a recent marriage and lack of money himself, as he was receiving no money up front from the Geffen deal, he went on to take a promotion job with Def Jam Records. His lack of time spent with the group was seen as disinterest from the label, however Non Phixion continued to make songs, often working with Ill Bill's brother Necro. Through independent distributor Fat Beats (whom DJ Eclipse also worked for), Serch kept releasing singles for the group and they continued to garner underground notoriety. Eventually a series of mis-communications between the group, Serch and Geffen over the whereabouts of money led to Non Phixion being dropped by the label.
