Wildlife Rescue presents Skunk Welfare Information

Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates and Leslie Rink of the Opossum Society present an educational show about skunks and skunk rehabilitation. Skunks (sometimes referred to, generally in North American countries, as polecats) are mammals best known for their ability to excrete a strong, foul-smelling odor. General appearance ranges from species to species from black and white to brown or cream colored. They belong to the family Mephitidae and to the order Carnivora. There are 11 species of skunks, which are divided into four genera: Mephitis (hooded and striped skunks, two species), Spilogale (spotted skunks, two species), Mydaus (stink badgers, two species), and Conepatus (hog-nosed skunks, five species). The two skunk species in the Mydaus genus inhabit Indonesia and the Philippines; all other skunks inhabit the Americas from Canada to central South America. Skunks were formerly considered to be a subfamily of the Mustelidae family of weasels and related animals (where some taxonomists still place them), but recent genetic evidence shows that they are not as closely related to the Mustelidae as formerly thought.

This video showcases some of the eastern gray, flying, and fox squirrels which have passed through our facility on their way to being released back to the wild. Some are orphans, others injured, but they have all been given a second chance. NYC NEEDS A WILDLIFE REHAB CENTER !!!! WILD BIRD FUND

© Rebecca Sommer, Sommerfilms 2010 New York City is a major stopover of the East Coast migratory flyway. Over 355 bird species live in the Big Apple or take refuge here during migration. Many of these birds are injured by flying into buildings that have sprung up along their ancient migratory pathways, others by cat attacks, vehicles, and human interference. Yet New York is the only major city in the US that does not have a wildlife rehabilitation center. The Wild Bird Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3), provides emergency care for over 1000 wild birds and animals in New York City each year. Working with Animal General and the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine, two veterinary hospitals on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the Wild Bird Fund is the central resource in NYC for wildlife emergency care and rehabilitation. This critical work is accomplished utilizing only borrowed space and volunteer labor. What the WILD BIRD FUND does It starts with a call from someone who has found an injured, ill, or orphaned bird or animal. The rescuer brings the patient in for a full exam including wound care, x-rays, surgery, splinting, diagnostic tests, and medicine. The Wild Bird Fund cares for all federally protected birds and critical cases, and trains the rescuer how to care for the non-critical patients. This year, over 4000 people called the Wild Bird Fund seeking information and help for distressed wildlife. Vision for the Future In 2010, the Wild Bird Fund aims to expand by 50% its ...

Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Is Losing its Home

This special wildlife hospital in the Oakland Hills has rented its space for around 10 years. The landlord no longer wants to rent, and the volunteers and animals must be out by mid-September. From the website: The Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue (YUWR) and Education Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization located in Oakland, California. We are dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured wildlife living in urban city centers and education of the public about how to live harmoniously with our cities' wildlife. We serve the cities of Oakland, Piedmont, Berkeley, Albany, Alameda, and surrounding cities in the State of California, USA. When an injured or orphaned wildlife mammal is found, we nurse these animals back to a healthy state where they are able to be released back into the wild. Through education to children and adults alike, we try to raise awareness of these wild residents of our cities in the hope that a better co-habitation will lead to less injuries/orphans and more enjoyment of the urban wildlife with which we share our cities. We are a grassroots organization and are 100% volunteer-run and donation-funded! Our Mission: To heal the sick and injured/orphaned animals brought to us and ready them for release back into our Urban Wilds. To educate people of all ages in the wonder and enjoyment of wildlife and nature and why it is so vital we protect it.
