Will Self asks 'Is the internet inherently psychotic?'

As English National Opera prepare to stage a new opera by Nico Muhly, we've asked writer Will Self to reflect on some of the issues that arise from the work. And he's worried. In fact, Will Self is very worried. The Opera: Two Boys Loosely inspired by actual events that occurred in an English industrial city, Nico Muhly's new opera is a cautionary tale of the dark side of the internet. On May 23 we'll be holding a live debate at the London Coliseum. Book your place at www.insideopera.com

Will Self - Walking to Hollywood

www.bloomsbury.com Will Self talks about his book, Walking to Hollywood. Walking to Hollywood is a dazzling triptych, obsessive, satirical, elegiac, in which Will Self burrows down through the intersections of time, place and psyche to explore some of our deepest fears and anxieties with characteristic fearlessness and jagged humour. Very Little is ostensibly the account of a curative journey to Canada and the USA, but in fact the record of a nematodes progress, as the worm of obsession with scale and packing and the stuff of our lives bores through a mind in extremesis. Walking to Hollywood is an extreme satire on celebrity, in which the narrator believes that everyone he meets is played by a famous actor, and that only he can solve the mystery of who murdered the movies. Spurn Head leads Self to a tormented sojourn with a madman whose house is sliding over the edge of a cliff, to a game of checkers with Death, and finally to an encounter with one of Swifts immortal Struldbruggs and a march through a tear in time itself. In Walking to Hollywood Will Self pushes memoir to the limits of invention.

Writer Will Self exposes how euphemism, jargon and obfuscation are used to disguise the deadly trade of selling arms to tyrannical regimes. The London Perambulator (full length documentary)

Featuring: Russell Brand, Will Self, Iain Sinclair and Nick Papadimitriou Directed by John Rogers John Rogers' film looks at the city we deny and the future city that awaits us. Leading London writers and cultural commentators Will Self, Iain Sinclair and Russell Brand explore the importance of the liminal spaces at the city's fringe, its Edgelands, through the work of enigmatic and downright eccentric writer and researcher Nick Papadimitriou - a man whose life is dedicated to exploring and archiving areas beyond the permitted territories of the high street, the retail park, the suburban walkways. The ideas of psychogeography and Nick's own deep topography are also explored. The London Perambulator premiered at The Whitechapel Gallery in the East End Film Festival, April 2009. It has also screened at The London International Documentary Festival, Curzon Soho's Doc Days, Cine City Brighton Film Festival, East End Film Festival's Movie Mayday - and others. LSE Literary Festival 2009 - I Shall Die by Inches: Contemporary Approaches to Death and Dying

Speakers: Will Self Chair: Dr Kavita Abraham This event was recorded on 1 March 2009 in Sheikh Zayed Theatre, New Academic Building "All but death" wrote Emily Dickinson "can be adjusted", and yet, the cold fact that bodies must eventually die only serves to hide the reality of death as a contested cultural domain, where competing notions of public and private, tradition and innovation, individual and collective, are played out, and discourses within literature, art, jurisprudence, medicine, religion, and politics all stake their claim to knowledge of the great unknown. This talk will illuminate the social aspects of death and dying in contemporary society, and challenge received ideas of what Rabelais' called our 'vast perhaps'.
