Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft - drum cover - (181)

The Theme from Shaft was written, arranged and recorded by Isaac Hayes in 1971. He also sang and played keyboard. It is the funk/soul theme song to the movie Shaft and is one of those unique songs that doesn't take you long to recognize. The single was a shortened version of the movie album version and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. The Theme from Shaft won an academy award in 1972 for Best New Song. The song starts with a 1/16 beat hi-hat beat pattern. The recording does not sound as though the drummer Willie Hall played the tamborine while drumming. Either way it was my preference to play it . This video is intended for the purposes of education, comparison and critiquing.

Shirley Brown - This Love

Track 4, Side 1 of Shirley Brown's 1984 album ' Intimate Storm' on Sound Town, and my favourite track by her. Recorded at Ardent in Memphis, produced by Homer Banks and Chuck Brooks, and featuring some of the great session men from late period Stax: Lester Snell, Willie Hall, Marvell Thomas, Ben Cauley and Andrew Love.
The Bo Keys — Spanish Delight

The incendiary soul/jazz/funk of The Royal Sessions is a hard-hitting and authentic modern take on Memphis' original soul-stew sound -- a mixture of original instrumental and vocal features that fuse R&B fundamentals with elements of modern hip-hop. An all-star section of Stax sidemen -- Ronnie Williams (The Bar-Kays, David Porter) on Hammond B-3 organ, drummer Willie Hall (The Bar-Kays, the Blues Brothers), and Charles "Skip" Pitts (Isaac Hayes) on wah-wah guitar -- joins garage rock prodigy Scott Bomar (Impala) on bass to lay down deep funk grooves for a mighty horn section consisting of Memphis' finest young players. Recorded and mixed at Willie Mitchell's (Hi Records, Al Green) Royal Studios, The Royal Sessions is steeped in the Memphis tradition. But it's much more than an homage: it's the sound of Memphis now-- familiar, fresh, and unquestionably fantastic. via yellowdogrecords.com

Nerima Daikon Brothers - Gimme Some Lovin'

I made this video in early 2008. It was entered into the AMV contest at AnimeNEXT 2008, and this video has received a great reception. I saw even one person said it was the best NDB AMV that anyone's ever made. It got taken off of YouTube for a while, but here it is again. The Nerima Daikon Brothers:Hideki, Ichiro and Mako, set to "Gimme Some Lovin'" by The Blues Brothers, which is probably the show's biggest influence. There's lip syncing in this video too.

Booker T. & the MG's Hang Em' High

Booker T. & the MG's is an instrumental R&B band that was influential in shaping the sound of southern soul and Memphis soul. Original members of the group were Booker T. Jones (organ, piano), Steve Cropper (guitar), Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). In the 1960s, as members of the house band of Stax Records, they played on hundreds of recordings by artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Sam & Dave, Carla and Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. They also released instrumental records under their own name, such as the 1962 hit single "Green Onions".[1] As originators of the unique Stax sound, the group was one of the most prolific, respected, and imitated of their era. By the mid-1960s, bands on both sides of the Atlantic were trying to sound like Booker T. & the MG's. In 1965, Steinberg was replaced by Donald "Duck" Dunn, who has played with the group ever since. Al Jackson, Jr. was murdered in 1975. Since then, the trio of Dunn, Cropper and Jones have reunited on numerous occasions using various drummers, including Willie Hall, Anton Fig, Steve Jordan and Steve Potts. Having two white members (Cropper and Dunn), Booker T. & the MG's were unusual in being racially integrated, at a time when soul music, and the Memphis music scene in particular, were generally considered the preserve of black culture.

Bennie Moten And His Kansas City Orchestra -- Thick Lip Stomp

Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra had been recording for OKeh since 1923. This is Moten's first record from his first Victor session, inaugurating his exclusive relationship with Victor. 'Thick Lip Stomp', a Moten composition which became 20406B, was the initial piece played at the session, then 'Harmony Blues', another Moten composition, which became 20406A. The personnel can be stated with less certainty. During the Long-Play Epoch, there were two major reissues of Moten's work for Victor, both under RCA's auspices, using the original masters and having access to personnel files. In the early 1950s, the founders of Riverside Records, Bill Grauer Jr. and Orrin Keepnews, produced a three-volume selection in the RCA 'X Vault Originals' reissue series. Volume 1, LX-3004, includes pieces from the first session, though not 'Thick' or 'Harmony', and lists the personnel as follows: "Ed Lewis, Lamar Wright, cornet; Thamon Hayes, trombone; Harlan Leonard, alto sax; Jack Washington, alto and baritone saxes; Woodie Walder, tenor sax; Bennie Moten, piano; Sam Tall, banjo; Abe Bolar, tuba; Willie Hall, drums." Some 20 years later, French RCA released on LP, 'Serie Black & White', virtually all the jazz in the Victor vaults, five LPs of Moten. Volume 1, 741056, presents an alternate take of 'Thick' and of 'Harmony', not the takes actually issued. The personnel for the session are given as follows: "Ed Lewis, Lamar Wright (tp); Thamon Hayes (tb); Woody Walder, Harlan Leonard ...

Jimmy Hall - I'm Happy That Love Has Found You

Jimmy Hall was born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in Mobile by a musical family steeped in gospel tradition. Hall shared the studio and stage with artists such as The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jeff Beck Group, Grand Funk Railroad, and a host of others while Wet Willie gained the reputation as one of the hardest working bands on the road. As Wet Willie helped to create the Southern Rock genre they scored a major radio success with Keep on Smiling. This record solidified their place in rock and roll history, and Wet Willie's hits are still being played on the radio today. In 1980 Hall recorded the hit single I'm Happy That Love Has Found You, then went on to work with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks (Allman Brothers Band), and Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers Band, Rolling Stones) in BHLT. It was, however, his featured vocals in 1986 on the critically acclaimed Jeff Beck album Flash that Hall received his greatest accolade: a Grammy nomination for Best Male Vocalist.
