A 1:27.59, by the data logger. This was a new personal best for me. It's not a very exciting clip, because there isn't any traffic. But I was finally able to put some data on top of the footage, so this video has a track map, some lateral-G information, speed, RPM, and gear changes on it. The trade-off for the data, at least for now, is a slight degradation in video quality. But I'm working on that. If you make it through to the end, you'll also see a quick insert shot from a camera I mounted on my rear license plate. There are still some kinks to work out with this, but I think the quality is getting better. I think that this is a pretty useful clip for someone who wants to improve their driving line at Big Willow.

It had been over three years since I was able to get back to the 1:29 laps I'd been running on Toyo RA1s. In this lap, I'm on Nitto NT01s, which I don't think are as fast. But recently rebuilding my front shocks and making some other suspension changes seems to have restored the car's capabilities. This 1:28.81 was the first open lap I got during the first session of the day. The car is a 1972 Porsche 911 that is mostly the brainchild (and creation) of Tyson Schmidt, who currently works at Hergesheimer motorsports in Lake Forest, CA.

Willow Springs International Raceway is known for its staggeringly high lap speeds, and it defines itself with one of the gnarliest, high-speed corner combinations anywhere in the world: a long decreasing-radius bend from Turn 8 to Turn 9. And so in an effort to preserve the world's population of auto scribes like us, Nissan has created a makeshift chicane to successfully emasculate these corners during our test of the 2009 Nissan Nismo 370Z. Smart move. Fortunately there are ample opportunities elsewhere on this track to explore the car's increased performance over the standard 2009 Nissan 370Z. Namely Turn 6, which apexes at a blind crest and is followed on the downhill side by a huge midcorner bump that makes the standard Z-car wallow like a Buick LeSabre over a Wyoming frost heave. It's here that the Nismo Z sells itself. In the Sport Z-car we're afraid. Afraid of physics. Afraid that the track will toss us — like a Buick — into the unforgiving desert. But after a few laps in the Nismo Z, we're confident. And we're faster. We keep our right foot planted all the way over the Turn 6 crest and across the bump, gaining enough speed that a few hundred yards down the track we ingloriously annihilate most of the orange cones that Nissan deployed to keep us alive. Nice.

I will not quit. Two months ago I got below the 1:29 barrier that had stood in my way for five years -- and I drove a 1:28.81 lap around the big track at Willow Springs. On January 18th, I went back and this time got my time down to a 1:28.21. If you don't know Willow Springs, that won't mean much. But I'm proud of it as a lap time for a street-driven car that weighs 2700 pounds with me in it and has only 272 horses at the crank. This is also the first test of a new, inexpensive two-camera setup for the car. Believe it or not, the cameras cost just $36 each and they output true 720p High Def video. I added wider-angle lenses, but my total cost was just $104 out the door (not including the memory cards). I created the picture-in-picture effect with my laptop's video editing software. Please let me know if you think the 720p version is worth the trouble of uploading. And thanks for watching.

I'm about 5 seconds off (my) pace here just gettin used to the bike, entering/exiting corner's in different gear's...tryin to find the sweet spot. I'm sure I'll be running consistant 1:38's in no time and would like to go 1:35 by year's end. Chris @ Pirelli fitted Diablo SBK SC3's slick's trackside and this is my 1st run out on them also. Bike handle's great. Jun @ Knology Tuning setup sag setting's for me, thank you Jun. Brakes on this bike are far superior to the Aprilia and it may take some gettin used to the power of these brake's. Very responsive and minimal lever pull required to initiate braking. Huge thank's to Lees Cycle's, San Diego for gettin this bike together for me. I had to find a replacement motor as the original motor was toast when I bought the bike. Dyno'd @ 117HP & 47 TQ. Running my 99 Eclipse GSX @ SoW with ExtremeSpeed track events in black run group. This track day was really just a shakedown to test out the car. The car did well with no real problems, and the prototype hood-ducted radiator setup really worked! Coolant temps stayed in the 190's even in traffic! Before the next track day I need better bads (Carbotech XP12's) and I'll be replacing all suspension bushings, arms, and wheel bearings.
