www.lockergnome.com - It is a well-known fact that Microsoft has struggled to make a mark in the tablet market. Unfortunately for Microsoft, consumer interest in Windows-based tablets has gradually declined as a result of a string of failed attempts by Microsoft to enter this market. This may all be about to change though; initial impressions of the upcoming Windows 8 operating system on tablets in action are quite positive. Here are some reasons why guest blogger Zuhair feels that Windows 8 tablets will succeed. www.lockergnome.com - Microsoft is putting a lot on the table with the upcoming release of Windows 8. Not only will it be the most significant change to the platform's UI since Windows 95 first appeared almost 20 years ago, but it also signals the latest in a long history of attempts by Microsoft to get a firm grip on the tablet and mobile markets. Currently, the iPad holds rank at an astounding 96% of all enterprise tablet computer purchases, and Microsoft wants nothing more than to grab some of this very profitable market for itself. Mobile phones are also an area in which Microsoft is losing ground, with the iPhone holding 53% of the enterprise market Can Windows 8 tablets compete with the iPad? As a Microsoft MVP for Tablet and Touch I often get asked, "Which Windows 7 Tablet PC do you use?" Since I'm on the road at least 3 out of 5 days a week I choose the Motion Computing F5v for a number of reasons. 1, It is powerful with an Intel Core i7 processor - fast, responsive and works every time. 2, It has best display on the market: Hydis AFFS+ panel behind Corning's super tough Gorilla Glass and with the all important fast and accurate Wacom active digitizer. 3, Hot swappable batteries, car chargers, battery chargers and fast charging mean that I never run out of power... ever! 4, It is rugged enough for the job (Life on the road is very tough on computers). So those are some of the reasons that I use the Motion Computing F5v for my job. Many other Australian companies requiring a tough, industrial strength, high performance work tool have chosen it too. This year Motion Computing released a capacitive touch + Wacom digitizer version and I'm trialing that version as we speak. Contact us to find out more. www.tabletpc.com.au

The hardware is Samsung Series 7 Slate PC (Intel Core i5 @ 1.6GHz 4 cores, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel HD Graphics 3000) running Windows 8 Consumer Preview. There are two main drawbacks of touch screen: it allows only left mouse button and I had to use external keyboard to enter password or make my DH stand in place while attacking (virtual kbd doesn't work with D3).

The Motion Computing F5v can now be ordered with the world's best Wacom Active Digitizer and Multi-Touch system. The F5v is a rugged field tablet PC for use in outdoor and rough environments. This video looks at the multi-touch capacitive screen on the F5v and the flexible input available in the standard version of Windows 7 Professional (this is not a special version for tablets). Of all of the Tablet PCs on the market to day, I choose the F5v as my mobile workhorse. It has an Intel Core i7 processor with a 128Gb SSD drive up to 8Gb of RAM which makes it more than powerful enough to replace most laptop or desktop PCs. For IT, the F5v is powerful enough to run most corporate Standard Operating Environments (SOE) in Windows 7 or XP. VPro, Intel Anti-Theft, 32 and 64bit supporting the F5v the easiest choice! With the Motion F5v, your field workers will never have to go into the office again!

www.lockergnome.com Tablet computers have been around for quite a while. But with the Apple iPad really raising the bar for quality and elegance and Amazon's Kindle Fire making basic tablets affordable for just about anyone with a will and a wallet, will Microsoft be able to approach the market with any angle unique enough to appeal to consumers not already taken with what's already out there? Ron Schenone looks at Microsoft's history and how its ways of ensuring profits aren't as surefire as they used to be. Gigabyte S1081 unboxing www.netbooknews.com The Gigabyte S1080 has gotten an update to the S1081 and we've decided to unbox it for you as well. The upgraded 10.1 inch tablet is nearly identical to the S1080 apart from a Cedar Trail processor bump to the N2800 processor. The processor change is actually a very significant one since one of the main flaws of the S1080 was that it was too hot, the N2800 allows for a much cooler experience, it still gets warm, but it's not even close to the same levels that we saw with the S1080.

www.gearlive.com - We give you a look at the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, an ultrabook that can morph into multiple form factors with ease. Lenovo is calling this an industry first, and we can't find reason to argue with them. The Yoga combines a portable 13.3-inch multitouch display with powerful innards. The dual-hinge design lets you turn this thing from notebook form factor into something that resembles a large tablet. You can also turn it inside out so that it becomes its own stand for watching content. The IdeaPad Yoga packs an Intel Core Ivy Bridge processor, has 8 GB RAM, a 256 GB SSD, and a battery that lasts up to 8 hours. Expect this one to hit stores in the second half of the year (probably around the same time as the launch of Windows 8,) for $1199. The Asus Eee Slate seems like it was designed from the beginning to run Windows 8. The newest operating system from Microsoft runs absolutely seamlessly on the Eee Slate's hardware and navigating the interface is a pleasure. Windows 8 shows a lot of promise as a tablet OS. However, it's clear that Microsoft did not want to go away from the desktop experience. Whether or not this is a win or a failure depends on the hardware being represented; the Eee Slate works very well, but its battery life isn't the greatest, and it's a heavy machine. The new Samsung Series 7 is supposed to have a much better form factor, but I'd like to see Windows tablets with the form factor of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, also with the 7-10 hours of battery life (the Eee Slate can pull off 5 at the most, the Series 7 is also rated at 5). Better battery is the only thing holding Windows back from making a comeback as a tablet OS (hint: it's been a viable tablet OS since XP Tablet PC Edition). Windows 8 doesn't feel like a dramatic difference or evolution of Windows 7. It feels like a service pack. That may turn some people off, especially if they're still running XP and never bothered with Vista or 7 in the first place. Microsoft is going to have to work hard to get Windows 8 adopted, especially in workplaces, where most are just now adopting Windows 7 for the first time.
