In 1979, Frank Zappa took a shine to an Eastern Indian rock/jazz violinist, L. Shankar. So much so that he produced an album with him, "Touch Me There." Not only does Frank produce, but he also co-writes half of the album and performs on one cut, "Dead Girls of London." So, not surprisingly, this disc sounds like much of the material Zappa was releasing around that time, even though it is technically a "Shankar" album. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Physics in India, Shankar moved to America in 1969 and earned a doctorate in ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. Here he met jazz musicians Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Garrison, and John McLaughlin while working as a teaching assistant and concert master of the University Chamber Orchestra. In 1975 Shankar and McLaughlin founded Shakti, a pioneering, groundbreaking and highly influential east-meets-west collaboration, with a fluid sound that managed to successfully combine seemingly incompatible traditions. His first solo album, Touch Me There, was produced by Frank Zappa in 1979.[3] Shankar founded his own band - The Epidemics, in 1982, with the composer Caroline. He released three albums with the band. During the 1980s, Shankar recorded periodically as a leader, doing both jazz-based material and Indian classical music. His 1980 release of the album Who's To Know on ECM introduced the unique sound of his own invention, the ten-string, stereophonic double violin. The aircraft shown here is Boeing's first flying 787-8 prototype and is in full Boeing Dreamliner colours. This flight departed Shannon at 11am (GMT) local time having overnighted in Shannon after arriving from Moscow, Russia 24 hours previously. This flight operated with the callsign "Boeing Zero Zero One" (Flight No : BOE001) with a squawk of 4241. As you can see the runway surface was very wet at the time as a heavy rain shower had passed through the area a couple of minutes before the 787 took off. Trivia : This aircraft first flew on 15/12/2009 from Boeing Field and was the first 787 ever to fly. It is powered by two Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines. Update (01/12/2011) - This aircraft was decommissioned and retired on this date. A wind storm that has been thrashing the southern North Island for much of the day is finally abating. In a notoriously windy city one Featherston street crossing is quite possibly the worst spot, where the wind was so fierce it blew a woman off her feet. She was helped by another pedestrian and after the shock wore off she continued on her way. But over in the Wairarapa two other pedestrians were injured, one seriously, and taken to hospital after a tree branch came down outside Greytown school. Principal Kevin MacKay says teachers had already kept the children inside during the break at that time because it was too dangerous to be out there. As the waves came crashing in at Oriental Bay, United Future leader Peter Dunne went tumbling down in the suburbs. In the city workers battled to put a marquee up while others concentrated on keeping themselves vertical. A woman, who had just moved down from Whangarei, used her suitcase as an anchor. "I didn't know it was this windy. I think the luggage is carrying us instead of me carrying the luggage, it's dragging me all the way." A severe gale warning has been in place since yesterday and this morning Metservice predicted winds gusting up to 130 kilometres per hour. By 10am they had reached 146 kilometres.
