Obsessives - Winemaker

Sean Thackrey is a winemaker, indeed, but he is so much more: an archivist, historian, linguist, photographer, art collector. Thackrey shares his views on the importance of barrels, respect for ancient techniques like letting grapes rest, the word terroir (he hates it), and much more. For wine aficionados, hes an inspiration. For wine novices, hes a deep source of knowledge.

Winemaker's Walk - North Fork, Long Island Winery & Vineyard

At Castello di Borghese Vineyard and Winery, Long Island's premier winery owned by Marco and Ann Marie Borghese, the ongoing tours of the facility, called Winemaker's Walk, include a visit to the wine cellar where guests can get an insiders view of the process of making fine wine. The walk was conducted by Ann Marie Borghese, owner of Borghese Vineyard, who answers guests' questions as she expertly guides the tour of the winery's production facilities. Additionally (weather permitting), the Winemaker's Walk includes a stroll through the 84-acre vineyard where visitors gain further winemaking insight by learning about the different grape varieties and growing procedures at Castello di Borghese. As the vineyard awakens in early spring, guests will witness the careful pruning of vines that has taken place -- an integral part of vineyard management that lays the foundation for the harvest. The leisurely walk concludes at the tasting room where visitors can sample the flavor of various wines. The favorite wine flight is Borgheses' Classic Tasting. Meet the Winemaker (Episode 62): Anastasia Mancini, Buccia Nera, by Debra Meiburg MW

For Buccia Nera winemakers and husband and wife team, Anastasia Mancini and Sandro Nalli, it's a true family affair. Anastasia clarifies how the name of the property, Buccia Nera (black skin) derives from a nickname given to her family who toiled for over 100 years under the hot Tuscan sun in the vineyards. Anastasia and Sandro reveal the distinct characteristics of the wines grown in Buccia Nera and how the rocky soil and the fact that they are 500 metres above sea level, makes for good grapes and longevity for the wine they produce.

Wine tasting is a tricky business with so many grape varieties to remember and different aromas to pinpoint. Thanks to Arnaud Mirey, the wine novice now has a helping hand. Mirey's wine tasting education tool, the 'Wine Aromas Game' which also doubles as a fun board game, consists of 80 different bottled aromas. It has taken Mirey five years of research to create this series of good quality authentic aromas with some being easy to capture and others such a flint or leather having to be chemically reproduced. Mirey's wine toolkit also includes a comprehensive book outlining the different families of aromas such as spice, flowers, etc. and aroma wheels which highlight the aromas most likely to be found in each grape variety. So if you're looking to give your nose a workout more on wine, or quiz your friends, take Mirey's advice, take a deep breath and get smelling. 'May the best nose win!

Meet the Winemaker (Episode 95): Charles Philipponnat, Champagne Philipponnat, by Debra Meiburg MW

Debra meets Champagne producer Charles Philipponnat of Champagne Philipponnat located near Mareuil sur Aÿ, who talks of the producer's hundreds of years of tradition and terrior, in particular explaining the significance of chalky soil for the region and how it has such a positive impact on the taste of the wines produced in Champagne. Debra poses the question of whether the appearance of bubbles is really an indicator of quality, and Charles offers further insight into the purpose of bubbles in Champagne. They go on to discuss the three families of aromas in Champagne, and Charles gives Debra a little pronunciation tutorial to conclude (a must see for those whose French vino vocabulary could do with a polish).

Life, Liberty & Viticulture: Bryan Babcock on winemaking, Patrick Henry, & Ayn Rand

Bryan Babcock is a cutting-edge winemaker named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the "Ten Best Winemakers of the Year" and voted "Most Courageous Winemaker of the Year." Part of his bold and daring reputation stems from his outspoken embrace of liberty and the ideas put forth by Ayn Rand. "I don't walk around thinking about Ayn Rand, John Galt, or Atlas Shrugged every second of the day, thinking about how I can make this [vineyard] be like Galt's Gulch. But if it was Galt's Gulch, the government would not be permitted to take one step on the property," says Babcock. "John Galt is the guy in fiction that Patrick Henry [was in] real life....And the world needs a few of those. The world needs an Atlas to hold up the globe. The world needs a John Galt or a Patrick Henry to say, 'Freedom is a good thing, man needs freedom, we've got to be free.'" Approximately 10 minutes. Babcock was interviewed by David Nott. The segment was filmed and edited by Alex Manning. Production assistants were Seth Goldin and Ryan Seals. This video is part of the Reason.tv series Radicals For Capitalism: Celebrating the Ideas of Ayn Rand.
