Napa Valley Wineries

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours her favorite Napa Valley wineries in this episode of "California Travel Tips." One of the most celebrated wine growing regions in the world, Napa is known for its bold Cabernet Sauvignons in the north and its smooth Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the south. Almost all of the wineries are located along the scenic farmland of Highway 29, which runs from Napa up to Calistoga. It's about 26 miles, or 40 minutes from start to finish. There are more than 195 wineries in Napa Valley. The Neighboring region of Sonoma has more than 75 vineyards and tasting rooms. And the numbers keep on growing. Clearly, it's impossible to visit all of the Napa wineries in one visit, so try to focus on about 2-3 per day. Many wineries are pet and child friendly! A few of my favorite Napa Valley wineries are the elegant Domaine Chandon, known for its bright sparkling wines and beautifully landscaped grounds; the rustic and beautiful Silverado Winery, perched on a knoll above the Silverado Trail; and the modern Opus One Vineyards, known for its Newgrange-style tasting room, manicured vineyards and single Bordeux style blend. Join a winery's club and you'll get a free tasting and discount on your purchases! For a relaxed and educational tasting room experience, don't miss St. Supery's Wine Discovery Center, where you learn how the grape goes from vineyard to bottle in less than 30 minutes. Red, White, & Sacrebleu: How American wines shocked the world

From wine elves to classy pitchmen, American winemakers have tried just about everything to challenge the dominance of French vintners. And yet, with infamous labels like Ripple and Thunderbird, Yankee wines had long endured the reputation of being good for just one one thing—getting blitzed. So it must have seemed like a cruel joke in 1976 when a British wine merchant arranged The Paris Tasting, a one-of-its-kind competition that pitted mighty France versus lowly America in a blind taste test judged entirely by Gallic wine experts. But as viewers of the movie Bottle Shock and the documentary Mondovino can tell you, the unthinkable happened: America took home top honors for both red and white wine. The Paris Tasting made Mike Grgich an instant legend, but back then, even the maker of the winning white couldn't believe he had won. "I said are you sure it's me?" recalls Grgich. How could this American, an immigrant who fled communist Yugoslavia, shock the world? The French wanted to find out, so Jean-Noël Fourmeaux, an official government wine taster became a wine spy. He headed to California to discover how, in the span of a couple of decades, American winemakers progressed from Thunderbird to Grgich's award-winning white. Fourmeaux encountered a freewheeling atmosphere of technological and cultural innovation—one that attracted the likes of Squire Fridell of Glen Lyon Vineyards, a winemaker who has his own reason for smiling at America's emergence as a leader in wine ...

Whidbey Island Winery - Langley, Washington

Washington provides a rich palette to the winemaker, and we try to reflect this diversity in our wines; from our crisp fragrant estate whites, perfectly suited to the region's culinary treasures; our unusual lighthearted rhubarb wine; to classic reds and whites from varieties grown in some of eastern Washington's finest vineyards. Having chosen Whidbey Island as an ideal site for a vineyard and winery, we planted the first grapes in 1986, and opened the winery doors in June of 1992 with 400 cases of wine. We now produce about 3500 cases a year using grapes from our own vineyards as well as selected eastern Washington vineyards. We invite you to come discover our award-winning wines, enjoy the winery grounds, and learn more about grape growing and wine making.

Cellar Number 8 - Asti Winery, Sonoma County

Located on the original property of Asti Winery, located in Northern Sonoma County, Cellar No. 8 pays tribute to the propertys rich history. You might know Asti Winery as the once-famed "Italian Swiss Colony," founded in 1881 by Andrea Sbarboro, who formed an entire community, with other Italian and Swiss immigrants, around the art of winemaking. They focused on using time-honored methods and techniques from the 'Old Country. In the 1960's, the Italian Swiss Colony was the second largest tourist attraction in California, next to Disneyland. In fact, there are many stories of friends who visited this historic winery as children, whose parents had made Asti Winery a regular vacation destination in Northern California. This was a grand place in its day, which hosted many parties for the California elite, including top government officials. The Asti Winery has always been a working winery, but only recently reopened its doors to the public as home to Cellar No. 8. Paul Rydquist, Winemaker for Cellar No. 8, prides himself on using traditional winemaking techniques, and handcrafting rich, complex wines from carefully chosen vineyards, making wines in a way that Andrea Sbarboro would approve. Cellar No. 8 wines are rich in flavor, approachable and affordable. With two different labels and price points, there is something for every palate and pocket. The White Label produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, priced at $10 and is readily available ...

JRickards Winery Sonoma County Tasting Room

J. Rickards Winery - Hard Work makes a Dream Come True! J. Rickards Winery is a family run operation of both grape farming & wine production, and is located at the northern end of the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. The owner, Jim Rickards, knew he wanted to be a farmer from the age of 12 years old. He grew up in the Big city of San Francisco and found that the city life didn't quite suit his natural ways and earthy disposition. So, he set his sights on farming and after a varied past including time in the military, cattle ranching in Petaluma, a full time position as an ER Nurse at Memorial Hospital in Petaluma, and fathering three children, he decided with his free time (aka nights) he would revitalize an old vineyard.....which brings us to J. Rickards Winery. Jim and his wife Eliza have been growing grapes for the bulk market and making wine for personal enjoyment since 1991 from their 60 acre vineyard. Encouraged by family & friends, they were inspired to open a winery and did so in 2005. Increasing their production required that they bring on Alex Holeman, their current winemaker, and his specialty is light, sweet, fruity wines that maintain their varietal character. At J. Rickards they make eight great wines all of which are available for complimentary tastings. One of their specialties is 'Zinfandel Ancestor Vines' from their Century old Zinfandel vines. Another is their 'Los Ninos Perdidos Red Dessert Wine' (The Lost Children) made from grapes that have been ...

Betty's Brunch at Jean Farris Winery with Rick --NO RECIPE --

In this video, Betty and her husband, Rick, have brunch at Jean Farris Winery. Jean Farris Winery is located between Richmond, Kentucky (in Madison Country, where we live) and Lexington, Kentucky (a larger city that is in the next county over, Fayette County). The winery contains several plots of grapevines, which you will see in this video. There is also a Bistro, where you can have dinner any night of the week and brunch on a couple of days of the week. We chose to have brunch, with my brunch being Quiche, a Field Greens Salad and fresh Strawberries on the side. Rick had Crab Cakes Benedict, with home-cured Crisp Bacon and Cheddar Cheese Grits. We shared a Bourbon Pecan Tart and came home with an unopened bottle of Jean Farris Dolce Blush wine. We had a wonderful time at Jean Farris Winery, and we hope you will try it out, if you are in the vicinity! I will be making a recipe that will be similar to one of the items on our menu. Johnson's Winery in Alexander Valley "Dances to the Beat of it's own Drum" only, it's a Pipe Organ! Every once in a while you happen upon a place that has something so rare, so unique, so unexpected - that it leaves you in awe. This is how we felt when we visited Johnson's Winery just off Hwy 128 in the Alexander Valley. This tasting room houses a "working" 1924 Robert Mortan Pipe Organ originally used in the silent movies. And, as if that isn't enough to make you want to jump in your car and drive on over, the organ is wired with it's very own percussionist orchestra that helps to create this wonderful cacophony of sound & rhythm, movement & excitement. Truly a wondrous experience! Ellen Johnson, the third generation proprietor, runs the family farm & winery. They sell most of the grapes they grow but, they reserve enough for themselves' to make 1000 to 2000 cases of an ever changing variety such as Johannisberg Riesling, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their wines are sold exclusively at their tasting room. They also have picnic grounds and Basset Hounds so bring your lunch, your family and your camera as you you won't want to miss this stop!

www.CookingUnderTen.com http www.Twitter.com Cooking Under Ten Show on the Road at Paso Robles Wine Tour 2012 Newport Beach, CA J Lohr Vineyard & Wines www.JLohr.com Three decades ago, the California Central Coast had yet to emerge as one of North America's world-class winegrowing regions. With little history or viticultural precedent, planting on the Central Coast was a gamble. One of an early handful of pioneers, Jerry Lohr was among the first to realize the vast, untapped potential of this now-acclaimed region with the establishment of J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. In the late 1960s, Jerry began an extensive investigation of California grape growing regions while searching for the ideal location for a vineyard. Raised on a South Dakota farm, his agricultural roots armed him with an innate sense for the intricacies of climate, soil quality and location. His research and instincts led him to the Central Coast, a unique location with one of the longest growing seasons in all of California. Selecting the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County for his first vineyard, Jerry planted his original 280 acres of varietal grapes in 1972 and 1973, and unveiled his San Jose winery in 1974. Borrowing a lesson from the French— that great Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon excel in very different growing conditions—Jerry began planting Cabernet Sauvignon and other red varietals in San Luis Obispo County's little-known Paso Robles region in 1986.
