Wolf Park Week- December 20, 2009

Saturday we enjoyed some quiet time with the wolves as the first snow of the year arrived. Monty, Dana, Ryan, and I found them in an affectionate mood, interacting nicely with few growls. This weather is their favorite, maybe a bit warm for them. I watched Ruedi, our lowest ranking pack member who seems to have a knack for getting along pretty well with his younger half brothers. Every wolf has a place in the pack and Ruedi has to submit to the other wolves, but has a lot of social freedom anyway. On Sunday, Monty wanted to photograph Tristan and Renki with antlers. He and Dana took along Big John, Caity, Ryan, and me as the audience for this Christmas tradition. Monty worked with Renki to associate the antlers with treats before trying to put them on him. Tristan has always enjoyed Monty's games and wore his antlers for a while without complaint as long as the treats kept coming. We had a pleasant visit with the wolves and many photos were taken. Merry Christmas from Wolf Park Week to all our fans!

Wolf Park Wolves!

Here is a little video I made today for my buddies at Wolf Park, Indiana. Incidentally, they just happen to be...wolves! Wolf Park, started as a research facility in 1972 by Dr. Erich Klinghammer, is now home to more than twenty wolves, as well as bison, various fox breeds, and wolf-dog hybrids. I have really become interested in the wolves at the Park, and since then decided to make a video showing just how pretty these furry buddies are! The music - just fit perfectly! This video is for anyone interested in wolves or who would like to learn more about Wolf Park in Indiana. These kind folks are always looking for part time labor and volunteers, and can take dozens of interns from around the world each year. They have fine programs, and several wonderful wolf watching periods throughout the four seasons. If you would like to learn more about their vast programs and opportunities, please visit their site: www.wolfpark.org

Wolf Park Week - May 10, 2010

Four wolf pups arrive at Wolf Park after a long drive from New York State Zoo. The pups need food, but first Puppy Mother Kathryn stimulates them to eliminate. Then she can bottle feed them which is not as simple as it sounds. Nathan helps by burping the pups. Then the pups go back to sleep. At 12 days old, pups mostly eat and sleep. This will be a fun summer at Wolf Park.

Wolf Park Week - June 13, 2010

Some action from the Sheriff's Dept. K-9 Unit Demonstration at Dog Days, with Monty Sloan shooting video and still photos simultaneously. Sandy drove in from Ohio again to treat our wolves, such as Tristan, who is 12 years old and enjoys having his arthritic hind end treated. Ayla does her best to assist Sandy. The pups get their first deer leg and they eventually find it to be quite delicious, especially little Devra. Since their regular diet at Wolf Park will be road killed deer, this is an important step in their development. Nathan and Monique monitor the pups to be sure they don't eat too much of this new food. The Wolf/Bison Demo was hot and underwhelming, with Renki and Ayla creating only a few interactions with the bison. They decided to go home after being chased away a couple of times.

Renki Teeters, Wolfgang Leaps at Wolf Park

The behaviors were ones the wolves came up with on their own. We put them on cue by the "mark and capture" method where the animal is rewarded for a behavior that the trainer likes, and then the animal is taught what the trainer calls the behavior and that the animal will be rewarded for offering the behavior when the trainer asks for it by name or gesture. Reinforcing behaviors like this offers a pleasant way of the wolves of combining environmental enrichment and increasing safety for humans by giving the wolves a number of behaviors to perform on cue. It can be used to interrupt or distract a wolf that is about to perform an undesirable behavior involving humans, so it can be a great help in interacting safely with the wolves.

Wolf Park Week - June 20, 2010

While the pups share a bunny, or don't, the Wolf/Bison Demonstration is the most interesting of the season so far. Kailani and Wotan try to engage a yearling cow who after some weak charges, retreats to the safety of the herd. Another juvenile cow tries to drive the wolves away. She is gradually drawn away from the safety of the herd, although she holds off the wolves for a while. Wotan grabs her tail for a moment and her confidence dissolves. The wolves press their advantage and the young cow flees back to the herd to reflect on her lost bravado. The crowd applauds this sustained interaction which vividly displayed the strengths and weaknesses of both species without injury to either. In over 25 years of Wolf/Bison Demonstrations, there has never been a serious injury to either species.

Rami visits Wolf Park

We are often asked while we are traveling with the wolves doing educational programs, how do we exercise the wolves? We do our best to get them out for exercise everywhere we go -but few places are set up for wolf exercise like Wolf Park! They have provided valuable research about there wolves and do a really great job educating the public about wolves! One of our favorite stops in Indiana-Wolf Park over the years has welcomed Mission:Wolf ambassadors to exercise in there dog pen. A dog pen built for Wolves! With Bison on one side of the fence and the wolf park wolves on the other, Rami, Magpie, and Raven settle in and cut loose!! Thanks to our friends at Wolf Park! The song "Venus" owned by Banannarama Mission:Wolf has no intention of making money from the use of it. For educational purpose only- Filmed by Kent Weber and Tracy Ane Brooks 2003

Wolf Park Week - June 6, 2010

What does a 40 day old wolf pup dream about? Your guess is as good as ours. Kathryn finds a pup in a box, and the pups are really enjoying their days outside in their enclosure which now has a pool. Nathan and Monique hand feed balls of ground carnivore meat, as the pups transition to solid food. The smallest pup has been named Devra, in honor of Dr. Devra Kleiman, a pioneering research biologist and student of Dr. Klinghammer. She is making progress, eating well, and even grabbing the other pups by the tail. The Wolf/Bison Demonstration features Ayla and Renki, who romp in the tall grass, creating some confusion in the bison herd. The vegetation allows the wolves to appear and disappear around the herd, but the bison group together more tightly and the wolves once again go home unlucky.

Wolf Park Week- April 18, 2010

Signs of Spring all over Wolf Park on a sleepy and windy weekend. Bison are munching the fresh vegetation, wolves and foxes enjoy naps in the shade, and visiting waterfowl drop into Turtle Lake. Howl Night visitors see three of the wolves howling on a log, which is unusual. On Sunday we welcomed a new bison calf, so new that the umbilical cord was still hanging out of the mother. Bison calves are precocial, well formed and mobile almost immediately at birth. This calf scampers pretty well considering it is only a couple of hours out of mom's womb. A young cow seems to want to help the calf get adjusted to life in the herd. Bison are very social animals, just like wolves.

Wolf Park Week - May 30, 2010 - Part 1

The pups are transitioning to solid food with a gruel of rice pudding and ground carnivore meat. The small black girl, who had trouble with bottle fed formula, loves the chunks of meat in the gruel, which surprises everyone. She still has a long way to go to catch up to her litter mates. After their meal, Nathan has to clean up the pups and they want to play rough with each other. Testing continues daily to chart their development, their senses, and their ability to track moving objects. Finally Wotan gives a nice solo at Howl Night. More to come in Part 2.

Wolf Park Week- December 27, 2009

Winter has arrived at Wolf Park- the wolves love cold and snow. Wolfgang is still reminding the other wolves that he is in charge. Ruedi is adept at appeasing Wolfgang, but sometimes he pushes his luck and Wolfgang reprimands him loudly. The bison are also well suited for cold weather. Snow piles up on their coats and doesn't melt because they are so well insulated. Randy Granger's "Calling Snow" seems appropriate to this scene.
