William Wolstenholme: ' The Torrent ', from 'Seven Pieces for Piano'
The Blackburn-born composer William Wolstenholme (1865-1931), though blind from birth, had a quite remarkable career as a church and concert organist. His musical training included transcribing the complete 'Fidelio' into Braille, and memorising it. As well as a considerable body of organ music, he also wrote some piano pieces. This one, from 1902, is really unusual in British piano music of the time in showing a considerable assimilation of the styles of the German pianists Ernst Haberbier and Adolf von Henselt (with maybe a little Chaminade thrown in) - rather than the usual Brahms, Dvorak or Mendelssohn. Given that Wolstenholme always had to use an amanuensis, it would have been a difficult task to notate the interweaving of melody and accompaniment in this 'etude'. Are you a Wolstenholme? If so you have a rich and ancient heritage. Maybe you're a Woolstenhulme? Or a Wolstenholm? Or a Woosnam? Or any of the other many spellings that make up the global family of Wolstenholmes? This video is a little 'taster' of the wolstenholme.org website that I'm develping between 2009-10. As you'll see from the video, the website will be packed full of information, much of it unknown to many Wolstenholmes. The website won't try to trace family trees, instead it will try to bring together some of the more interesting parts of the Wolstenholme story and act as a signpost for places to get more information. Most of all it aims to bring alive the story of the Wolstenholme family and perhaps to stimulate some Wolstenholmes who have no idea about their own roots.
