Secrets of World War II -- What Really Happened to Rommel

Secrets of World War II -- What Really Happened to Rommel This film chronicles the career of Germany's most brilliant World War II tactician. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (1891-1944) was nicknamed the "Desert Fox" for his brilliant leadership of German troops in North Africa. He had an unbroken string of victories until defeated by General Montgomery's much larger forces in Egypt. This documentary contains film clips of the famed "Ghost Division" and rare footage of Rommel's state funeral. The question of Rommel's fate is addressed: was he murdered, or did he commit suicide? It is known that he became convinced that Germany would lose the war and that Hitler should relinquish power. Rommel's involvement in the plot to oust Hitler is examined, along with the intrigue surrounding Rommel's death. See my account for more documentaries about the Second World War.

The Japanese were serious, sober, and deliberate when they methodically and systematically looted thirteen Asian Countries during World War 2. They took treasure including precious diamonds and other gems, gold bullion, and solid gold Buddha's out of every hiding place. Much of this treasure did not make it back to Japan due to a World War 2 naval blockade of the Philippine islands by the United States, and has been recovered recently in underground hiding places. (1/5) Dangerous Missions - Taranto - World War II

In 1940, British forces began battling the Italians in North Africa. While the Italians were easily able to supply their troops, the logistical situation for the British proved more difficult as their ships had to traverse almost the entire Mediterranean. Early in the campaign, the British were able to control the sea lanes, however by mid-1940 the tables were beginning to turn, with the Italians outnumbering them in every class of ship except aircraft carriers. Though they possessed superior strength, the Italians were unwilling to fight, preferring to follow a strategy of preserving a "fleet in being." Concerned that Italian naval strength be reduced before the Germans could aid their ally, Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued orders that action be taken on the issue. Planning for this type of eventuality had begun as early as 1938, during the Munich Crisis, when Royal Navy leaders first conceived an operation calling for an aerial attack on the Italian fleet base at Taranto. This plan was reactivated in September 1940, when its principal author, Rear Admiral Lumley Lyster, joined Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham's Mediterranean fleet with the new carrier HMS Illustrious. Codenamed Operation Judgment, Cunningham and Lyster planned to attack Taranto on October 21, Trafalgar Day, with aircraft from HMS Illustrious and HMS Eagle. This was later changed following fire damage to Illustrious and action damage to Eagle. While Eagle was being repaired, it was decided to press <b>...</b>

Sea Wreckage Of World War II

While going through some photos of underwater pics of WWII wrecks, Stretch from Australia was inspired to put the pictures in a video to the tune of the music he was listening to. The images are fantastic! These are just some of the items still on the ocean floors around the world. Imagine how many craft are there, from old time sailing ships to airplanes and even a space capsule.

Subscribe to Excellent World War II Videos At six miles wide, Omaha was the largest of the landing areas, with the toughest defense. The water and beach were littered with mines and the entire beach being overlooked by 30-metre cliffs. The experienced 352nd German Infantry Division had the beach covered. The 1st Infantry assault experienced the worst ordeal of the D-Day operation. All but two out of 29 amphibious tanks sank and almost all the senior officers were killed or wounded as they set foot on the beach. Despite a 50% casualty rate, the survivors regrouped and pressed on. Aided by heavy naval bombardment, the infantry crossed the beach and began scaling the cliffs. Paratroops closed in on the German defense from behind, enabling the beach exits to be secured by midday. The Americans suffered 2400 casualties at Omaha on June 6th, but 34000 Allied troops had landed by nightfall.

(1/5) Pacific Lost Evidence Okinawa World War II

SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT WORLD WAR II VIDEOS Landing day for Okinawa, the final land battle of the Pacific War, was Easter Sunday, 1 April 1945. The Landing force was the new Tenth Army under Army Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner. He commanded two corps, XXIV Corps, with five army divisions, and III Amphibious Corps, with three Marine divisions, all told some 182000 troops. In overall charge was Vice Adm. Raymond A. Spruance, commander of the Fifth Fleet. Okinawa, sixty miles long and from two to twenty eight miles wide, is the largest and most important of the Ryukyu Islands. The 500000 Okinawans were not then considered to be Japanese. Japanese Lt. Gen. Mitsuru Ushijima commanded the Thirty second Army, strength of 77000 troops, who with naval forces and some 20000 Okinawan conscripts provided about 100000 defenders. Ushijima planned a defense in depth, with his main strength in the heavily populated south, and three major defense lines following east west ridgelines. Buckner landed his two corps, each with two divisions in the assault, across surprisingly undefended beaches near Hagushi village on the western side of the narrow waist of the island. The III Corps on the left and XXIV Corps on the right crossed the island almost without enemy contact. The Marines then turned northward and the army headed south. On 6 April, XXIV Corps ran into the outer rings of Ushijima's first major defense line running along Kakazu ridge. Ushijima's plan was to delay his counterattack <b>...</b>

(2/12) World War II Mind of a Code Breaker

World War II Videos During the two years of the war, British cryptologists decoded German communications with limited success. Older codes, used for low security messages, were readily identified and broken by the Bletchley Park team. Some newer codes were broken mathematically, but decoding and translating these messages by hand proved an arduous task. By the time messages were fully understood, the information they contained was often outdated. Compounding the problem, these intercepts contained very little useful intelligence information. Since the mid-1930s, the German government had used complex cipher machines to disguise their most important communications. The first great code breaking triumph at Bletchley Park came on August 30, 1941. A British "Y Station," one of the military listening stations that intercepted German communications, picked up a depth, a repeat transmission that used the same settings on the cipher machine. This intercept was forwarded to Bletchley Park. Cryptologists identified as "fish," the nickname for a message produced by the illusive Geheimschreiber cipher machine. Within two months, the Bletchley Park team broke the high-level German code. To facilitate the processing of "fish" intercepts, Bletchley Park engineers borrowed an idea from plans the Polish intelligence service gave Britain before the war. They constructed a machine that aided the deciphering of intercepts, nicknamed a "bombe" because of the low, roaring noise it made while <b>...</b>
