A two horse race for the first time in Poland and very little to choose in substance yet rated as being the most important elections in Poland since the fall of socialism in 1989. The result was a resounding victory for Platforma Obywatelska - much greater than that which was expected. The polls showed a lead for Platforma Obywatelska but they were wrong three years ago and I believed that the polls showed bias in favour of urban voters against rural voters. However it turned out that the polling organisations were much more sofisticated than I, or former premier Jaroslaw Kaczynski, gave them credit for. Nonetheless Prawo i Sprawiedliwość actually gained seats in Parliament with more than one million votes than it gained in 2005 which shows a significant increase in its support. This must be due to Jaroslaw Kaczynski's success in alienating and marginalising his former coalition partners whose voter clearly chose to back PiS. Lewica i Demokraci performed more or less as expected and probably will from now be a permanent feature on the Polish political scene. Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe also came back from a position of being almost completely submerged by Samoobrona and for the second time in five years could find itself once again in government.
