It's official. World Youth Day is finally here. The big event kicked off Tuesday night with an opening Mass in Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles, one of the city's main monuments. It was surrounded by thousands of young people, who traveled from every corner of the world.

Pope Benedict XVI revealed the location of the event at the final Mass in Australia at Sydney's Royal Randwick Racecourse during 23th World Youth Day 2008. It will be the second time that Spain will host the event. World Youth Day 1989 was held from August 15 20, 1989 at Santiago de Compostela. The World Youth Day logo for Madrid 2011 symbolizes the letter M for Madrid and the M for Maria, and it evokes youth coming together.
