Xasthur was a Californian one-man black metal band formed in 1995 by Scott Conner, who goes by the pseudonym "Malefic". Although similar in terms of low-fi production and the wearing of corpse paint, musically and lyrically Xasthur's focus is usually not on paganism, Satanism or anti-Christian blasphemy -- as is common in the genre -- but rather on astral projection, darkness, despair, suicide, hate, and death. Malefic has toured with Sunn O))) and has joined Nachtmystium on stage,but stated in an interview for Pitchfork Media that he "will always keep Xasthur a band that will not play live." The name "Xasthur" is a combination of "Hastur" and "Xenaoth". Malefic explains that he found the former name in a Necronomicon paperback and believes it refers to "a demoness who kills people in their sleep." Listen: bit.ly For his last album Xasthur has pulled together some production and sounds that dwarf what we heard on his previous album, All Reflections Drained. But sonically is the only way the work here advances. In terms of structure and melody, this album is still very much made of interludes that range from sort of engaging to not so engaging. Some of the musicianship is appallingly sloppy, too, which can make it difficult to take the dark moods of this album seriously. I like the sounds, but not much else. What do you think of this album? I bought/own almost all Xasthur records (I just don't have the insanely rare stuff such as the Orosius split. If anyone has it and is selling it message me). Scott Connor imo is (now 'was') one of the best composers within Black Metal. If you appreatiate this art then support Xasthur and do as I did and buy his records. These two songs are from the re-release of the Xasthur/Acid Enema split CD on Total Holocaust Records (quite a rare cd these days). I don't think anyone else has put this on youtube before that is why I posted it. BUY if you like! The song was/is originally written by Ian Fleming.
