www.videolifestyle.com http did a simple low light test pitting the XF305 with my EX1r and here are the results. I must add that the XF305 is really awesome in terms of the large and very high definition LCD screen which is a welcome improvement from Canon. The gain is pretty impressive even at 18db as well as also the fact the lens is a much brighter lens. As you can see i had not done any white balance as well leaving the camera very much to its auto WB the Canon always produce you warmer colours all the time since even the days of the Xl1s etc,,, the only thing i may just like to add that i dislike the XF about is the fact the ZOOM is pretty irresponsive not reacting to your command instantly. instant auto focus is awesome as always and most of all the three types of stabilizing systems to choose from is simple a welcome with 18X optical zoom capabilities. Again the grip as i mentioned is not all that comfortable reminding me very much of the first EX1. However, for 1/3rd inch sensors pretty impressive IMO.
Made it as bad as I could for this MPEG-2 50mbps 4:2:2 camera. Difficult light situation. Zoomed in to full extend and gain up from 12 to 18 db. Some blocking can be seen in the pan to the left starting with the taxi's and on the back of the bus, but not on the street car going to the left which was denoised. Blocking is caused bij compression of noise and is not visible in the original clip. Try to make a new H264 copy. First shot is in full auto mode up to 21 db when zoomed out. Again light conditions are extreme low. The next 8 shots were graded and colour manipulated with Colorista to get rid of the horible sodium light but shots contained all artificial light sources you can think off. 3 of the 8 shots have Magic Bullet denoiser applied just to check that plug in out. It is easy to spot. It performs not as good as a Canon DSLR in the dark but it is not bad at all. I am quite happy with the camera's performance and handeling. I think it is a lot of camera for a fair price. Did a daylight test as well on a fieldhockey game and I am quite satisfied.

Here are some clips shot with both the Canon XF305 and Sony EX1R. I have also included some shots done with a NanoFlash at 50Mb/s and 100Mb/s for comparison. Overall there is little to choose between the cameras. One point I would raise: Don't mistake Noise for resolution! Looking at the trees and foliage the XF305 at first glance appears to be sharper, but look more closely, is it real detail or just very fine noise that gives the impression of more detail? The close up split screen of the car is more telling. The 305 looks soft compared to the EX1R, but this is the very same clip as the close up foliage and sky footage. The XF305 Noise is more visible than the EX1R's noise. I have not made any actual measurements, but I prefer the EX1R. The EX1R is also 1.5 stops more sensitive.

Canon's new XF305 compact camcorder features a unibody design, incorporating an 18X zoom lens. The focus function button on the lens barrel can activate full manual focus or auto focus. Canon Broadcast UK were good enough to let me evaluate their indie targeted camera the XF305. Rather than do the normal looking at charts etc, I took it out and tried it in various working environments. This is some test footage of a Midge Hatch at a lake in Essex, UK. This is a HD version as someone sent me a message to say they couldn't see the Low Res properly on their iphone.

Canon XF 305, 1st shot I Messed about with shutter speed,1/1200 @ 50 Fps, 30 Mbps and slo mo ( spec rec S & F FRAME RATE 720p,Full Ap)..Obviously light is a problem so no ND.. ie OVER CRANKING.. Better water Shots to follow when footage is retrieved from that Hard Drive in the in the sky,.. The rest of the shots are slowed to various in FCP..%
