Analog Photography Tutorial: Yashica FX-3
How to load a 35mm film cassette, how to dismount and mount lenses and other essentials After I had made the Virtual Camera Museum video series I was surprised to see that so many people are still interested in analog photography nowadays. So I thought maybe I could make a little filming and editing exercise concerning some essential issues of handling an old, mechanical, analog camera. The Yashica FX-3 was manufactured by Cosina (as CT-1A and later on as CT-1 Super) in Japan, and there were many similar models, either with Pentax PK, Minolta MD or Yashica/Contax YC mount, and labeled later under several brand names, like Braun (as SR 2000) or Phenix. So it is also a little bit like a "How to use an old SLR" tutorial because all of these manually working 35 mm film photo cameras follow pretty much the same principles of how to handle them. :-) You can also see how to open the camera back by pulling the film rewind knob - many newer cameras had a rather different opening system. :-) I've made another video with some advanced features of the FX-3 that you can find here: www.youtube.com

Yashica Electro 35 GT
My Analog Project 2011 continues in the month of September with the Yashica Electro 35 GT. This 35mm range finder built by Yashica back in 1969 was considered a Pro rangefinder with it's sleek design and super easy semi-automatic exposure system. The camera featured higher ISO options going all the way up to an ISO of 1000 which was very popular with pro photographers. As mentioned, the semi-automatic exposure is easy to use in conjunction with the indicator lights on top of the camera as well as illuminated arrows inside the view finder. But the lack of shutter speed indication anywhere on the camera is a major downside in my opinion, there are times when I prefer to control shutter speed over aperture. This was one of the first rangefinders I bought back in 2010 when I started collecting vintage cameras because I admired it from when I was a teen many years ago.

Yashica FR-I + ML 55mm Macro + Winder
On special request - A supplement for the second part of the "Virtual Camera Museum series". How to screw on a winder. The foam, one of the weak points of the FR-I, had been replaced with closed cell foam from a sleeping pad. :-)

Fixing my Yashica FX-3
I followed do-it-yourself instructions from www.yashica-guy.com. Problem: the foam on the inside of the FX-3 camera body used for blocking outside light leaks had deteriorated, allowing light streaks to enter the camera body, and symptoms appeared as bars of light on my film and my prints. I followed instructions, recorded the process of repairing the camera's foam, and share several "before and after" photos proving the positive results.

Yashica Mat 124G TLR camera Restoration part 1
I have two cameras here. Both Yashica Mat 124g TLR models. One is working. But is WORN out. Its banged up and just looks like crap. The other is not work and is missing afew parts. But is 7 out of 10 on looks. I have torn down both cameras. Removed the self timer from the working model and installed it in the none working model. I have swaped all the elements out till I know have a REALLy nice set in the working model. All that is left is to install the crank handle and see if it all works with the film. Once done I will tear it all down again and strip the worn out black paint from the frams and repain the whole thing and then add new leather.

Yashica Mat 124G Shutter and Timer working again.
This is a real snappy Yashica Mat 124G shutter that did not have a Self Timer installed. So after much heasitation I pulled apart my parts camera removed the timer from it. I then Installed it in the one you are watching.

Yashica Super 800 Electro Super 8 movie camera mini review.
The Super 800 Electro is the top of the line Yashica Super 8 Movie Camera from 1970. Yashinon lenses were made by Pentax who reputedly made the fastest and sharpest zoom lenses back in the day. Yashica also had a reputation for building the best auto exposure systems and the fact that 40 years later many of their cameras are still metering perfectly bear that out. This camera is all metal and built to last. The Yashinon lens displays nice filmic bokeh and graininess is above average for a super 8 lens. If you find one in good condition, buy it! It will probably rune forerver. What's not to like? No macro.

Advanced features and additional accessories. On special request my second FX-3 tutorial: How to use the self-timer, how to use a cable release, how ot mount and use a flash and other tips and accessories for your Yashica FX-3 (Super 2000). After having uploaded my first tutorial video for the FX-3 I was astonished to see how many young photographers still use these fine analog cameras instead of using digital cameras all the time!
