DemocracyNow.org - Oil giant ExxonMobil faces mounting criticism of its cleanup efforts after one of its oil pipelines ruptured on Friday and leaked 42000 gallons of crude oil into Montana's Yellowstone River. The company initially downplayed the incident by saying it would only affect 10 miles of the river, but state officials say the oil has already stretched over 240 miles to near the North Dakota border. The spill comes as the Obama administration considers a massive new oil pipeline called the Keystone XL that would carry corrosive tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico. The pipeline would cross the Yellowstone River as well as the Ogallala Aquifer — the largest freshwater aquifer in the US Democracy Now! speaks with Alexis Bonogofsky, a family farmer who lives along the Yellowstone River and was briefly hospitalized after suffering from what doctors diagnosed as acute hydrocarbon exposure. Montana authorities estimate that about 1000 barrels of crude have leaked out of an Exxon Mobil Corp. pipeline into the Yellowstone River, a state official said Saturday. The pipeline has been shut down. Tim Thennis, a spokesman for the Montana Disaster and Emergency Services division, provided that initial estimate. He added that although no cause of the spill has been determined, it's possible that heavy flooding affecting that part of the US could have played a part. Thennis said that flooding is also interfering with the clean-up effort, meaning the oil could reach the Missouri River, of which the Yellowstone is a tributary, making the task even more difficult for emergency responders. Montana emergency officials have notified officials in North Dakota that the oil could be heading their way, Tennis said. "There's no way to capture [the oil] right now," Thennis told Dow Jones Newswires. "The further it spreads the more difficult it becomes." The Texas-based oil giant said it discovered the leak early Saturday morning. Exxon said it "deeply regrets this release" and that it is working with local authorities to mitigate the impact. The leak took place in a 12-inch crude pipeline that runs from Silver Tip, Mont., to Billings. The incident comes amid heightened concerns about pipeline safety stemming from natural gas pipeline explosions across the US, and from a major spill in July 2010, in which 20000 barrels of oil escaped from an Enbridge Energy Partners LP pipeline in ...

Produced by MetamorphFilms.com. Quirky sound recordist and Montana local, Mike Kasic, has an unmatched obsession for the underwater wilderness of the Yellowstone River. In this 10-minute short, Mike tells the tale of the river with the help of his wetsuit and fins. He swims the Yellowstone like a human-fish through swift river canyons and scenic mountain views, watching trout in fast currents filled with frothing water tornadoes, stopping only to body surf river waves. His message is simple: a river is more than its water; what lies beneath is a wilderness that is often overlooked, but critical for the Yellowstone ecosystem to thrive.

The Yellowstone river ownes its name after the yellow colour of the rocks along the river banks. The river squeezes itself through lava walls, passes waterfalls and rages through the 360-metre deep grand canyon of the Yellowstone on its way to the north side of the park. Clean soil, clear water and pure air are essential conditions for a healthy environment. An environment in which man, plants and animals can live in peace. Yellowstone offers these conditions to an extent. Yellow-bellied marmots are hibernating animals. They wake up in the beginning of May. This marmot is enjoying the sunbeams at the top of the steep sheepeater cliffs. It looks like a kind of fat squirrel, but do not be mistaken: they are extremely quick and agile. The bottom side of their fur is yellow. Their backs are greyish brown. Wapiti hinds graze peacefully, the first calves have been born and follow their mother to the grassy meadows. Everything is done with the utmost care, for apart from the coyotes, grizzlies sometimes show a keen interest in the calves. It is safer between the sagebrush. Info HighRes Imagery: www.stockshot.nl
