ODYSSEY Native New Yorker

A CLASSIC SONG MIX OF POP, R&B, DISCO, SWING, JAZZ.ONE OF THE BEST NEW YORK SONGS. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE OVER 500000 VIEWS. Odyssey was a New York based dance music band. It grew out of the talent of the Virgin Islands born Lopez sisters: Lillian Lopez (born 16 November 1945), Louise Lopez (born 22 February 1943), and Carmen Lopez who later dropped out of the group.Tony Reynolds was added, at which point the band became known as Odyssey. The group was best known for its December 1977 hit "Native New Yorker", which reached #21 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was later covered by Frankie Valli. Although a string of albums and singles followed, the group managed only one other R&B chart smash, the Slave produced "Inside Out", written by Jesse Rae, which peaked at #12 in 1982. Reynolds, for unknown reasons, left after the first album and was replaced by Fayetteville, North Carolina native William "Bill" McEachern, who remained with the group throughout the remainder of its RCA record label output. Tony Reynolds passed away on February 4,2010 while residing in his home in Jamaica, Queens, New York. In the United Kingdom, the band with its gentle Caribbean style had more success, totalling five Top Ten hits between 1977 and 1982. One of them, "Use It Up and Wear It Out", reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in 1980. Odyssey thus became the third US act of the year (after Fern Kinney and MASH) to reach Number one in the UK despite failing to chart in their ...

Some New Yorkers Don't Miss the Train -- They Miss the Old Station

One hundred years have passed since New York's Pennsylvania Station opened its doors. The building stood in the middle of Manhattan for more than 50 years. Today, only the underground area remains. Lorraine Diehl wrote a book about Penn Station. She remembers playing there as a child. LORRAINE DIEHL: "Every space just sort of triggered your imagination. For instance, when you walk in from Eighth Avenue, that was the great train shed, the concourse, and it was this extraordinary space of great vaulted iron columns and a glass ceiling, and the dust particles would just drift in and just be frozen in space. And you felt that this was a room of journeys. Your mind took a journey before you ever got on a train in this space." The old Penn Station was covered with statues of eagles and young women. Artist William Low never saw the building. But he used old pictures and descriptions to make a picture book about it. WILLIAM LOW: "It's just awe-inspiring. It would be like the first time I saw the Grand Canyon. The idea of this immense space -- you can't put it into words." Low painted the separate rooms of the station: the concourse, the restaurants and waiting room. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was the owner of Penn Station. By the early 1960s, the company was failing. So it sold the above-ground building to the developers of a sports center -- Madison Square Garden. WILLIAM LOW: "It was torn down. And the sculptures were ripped apart and unceremoniously dragged and dumped ...

Smoking Bans Are No Match for New Yorkers

Smoking in bars and restaurants has been banned in New York City since 2003 but Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently added beaches, parks, and pedestrian plazas to the long and growing list of places where smoking is verboten in the Big Apple. "Sin taxes" on cigarettes have driven the average price of a pack to more than $11. Yet in a city renowned for its innovation and drive, smokers have found ways to work around government attempts at social engineering. These include the booming "loosie" trade, where street entreprenuers risk arrest to sell loose cigarettes for a dollar each on the streets of Manhattan; tobacco crops blooming in Brooklyn; and a thriving Soho bar/restaurant that survived the smoking ban thanks to an obscure grandfather clause. With so much tax revenue being lost to the black market, and even the green market, perhaps it's time for a mayor who made billions in the free market to consider allowing business owners to set their own policies, and let the marketplace sort out the demand for smoking and smoke-free establishments. New Yorkers being preyed on by Black Water NYPD with no badges.

NYPD's Black Water mercenary style undercover division which drives around in unmarked cars with bent up license plates or no plates at all continues to plague New yorkers by targeting innocent pedestrians and motorist that have broken no laws. Their so-called proactive policing is in reality the total disregard of the 4th amendment which protects Americans against warrant-less search and seizure. Officers conducting these stops rarely display their badges so they can not be later identified by the person or persons they have stopped which is a blatant violation of the law and a willful act to avoid accountability. In my opinion this boils down to pure terrorism on the part of the NYPD. They hunt people like animals and subject them to curbside strip searches in hopes of adding new inmates to the booming prison population at the tax payers expense. They don't have any money to build modern schools or pay teachers or doctors but they can always find money to build more prisons and buy hi-tech gadgets to more efficiently herd the population in prisons. New York has become a Cybertron like city of cameras, face scanners, license plates readers and real time tracking as the real problem of unemployment is ignored. There are no jobs and there is no help for millions of suffering families and the NYPD is betting on people resorting to crime in a desperate attempt to pay their bills and feed their families as they simultaneously inundate the people with tickets and summons to ...
