Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has taken a lead in the emission free car arms race when they unveiled their brand new electric vehicle and hybrid models this week. The new Electric vehicle, nicknamed the EV-02, has a 660 pound lithium ion battery that is twice as powerful as the conventional hybrid battery. The boxy EV-02 zipped around Nissan's test course, accelerating faster than comparable gas powered cars... quieting electric car critics. Nissan also unveiled a new hybrid model, to compete with Toyota's popular Prius and Honda's Civic models. The dramatic unveiling of the electric vehicle made it clear that battery powered cars are at the center of Nissan's green strategy. The real winner in the no emissions arms race is the consumer, who will be paying less for gas, and the environment, as less emissions are released into the atmosphere. Nissan's new electric car and hybrid set to be released in the US and Japan in 2010, and the rest of the world in 2012. Now it's Toyota and Honda's turn to respond to up the green ante. The Opus - A new take in personal transportation, a fast, crash-safe, zero emissions vehicle, made with current technologies. The Opus has performance comparable to a 250cc motorcycle, it has a range of over 150 miles and can be charged in under 30 minutes. It is practically maintenance free, and is as easy to ride as a bicycle, given that it has no gears. The Opus' mechanics are extemely elegant, its space frame structue opens like a clamshell to allow entry and closes to form a rigid triangulated rollcage & chassis similar to those used in motorsport. The rider wears a five point harness and internal and external airbags protect the rider futher in an accident. It uses simple technology and is (aside from the batteries) entirely bio-degradable or recyclable, it's wheels are of a 26" size, so in an emergency you can run into any bike shop in the world and buy a replacement tyre or even a wheel in extreme circumstances. It can have an additional dome roof fitted to provide complete weather protection, and you can use it to exercise and get fit by augmenting a small amount of the motors power with your own human power for an extremely even and low impact exercise.

We travel to the moon-like island of Gotland, Sweden to see a £5million car running in Europe for the first time. The Honda FCX Clarity is an environmentally friendly, zero emissions, hydrogen powered, electric car. Transcript: "We are here on the beautiful island of Gotland, belonging to Sweden. Gotland is a very good example for how the future could look in terms of sustainable energy. Gotland has lots of wind power available with which you could generate Hydrogen - and that is the fuel which our car needs. The FCX concept car is a demonstration of what has been achieved at Honda in terms of fuel cell technology. As you know, we have air pollution problems which we almost solved so far, we have further the CO2 issue which is for global warming and therefore we have to be simply renewable. The fuel cell works simply as an electric vehicle, we have no real batteries on board, we utilise the Hydrogen to run in an electrochemical process. The electricity generated we use for the propulsion by electric motor. Well of course Honda is the largest producer of internal combustion engines which means more than 21 million. The ultimate goal is to fuel cell technology for Honda. We are considering an approach which is called Honda Home Energy Station where we create Hydrogen through a reforming process out of natural gas as one solution.
