DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Detour (1945) is a film noir thriller that stars Tom Neal, Ann Savage, Claudia Drake and Edmund MacDonald. The movie was adapted by Martin Goldsmith and Martin Mooney (uncredited) from Goldsmith's novel and was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. The 68-minute film was released by the Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC), one of the so-called "poverty row" film studios in mid-twentieth century Hollywood. Although made on a small budget with bare sets and straightforward camera work, Detour has gathered much praise through the years and is held in high regard. Al (Tom Neal) is a piano player who sets off hitchhiking his way to California to be with his fiancee. Along the way a convertible driven by Charles Haskell Jr. stops to pick him up. Al is driving while Haskell sleeps when a rainstorm begins and Al pulls over to put up the top. However, Haskell does not wake up and falls out onto the pavement, dead. Al dumps the body in a gully, takes Haskell's money, clothes and ID, then drives off in Haskell's expensive car. In voiceover, Al tells the audience that he did not kill Haskell. After spending the night in a motel, Al picks up another hitchhiker. As it happens, Vera (Ann Savage, playing a femme fatale) had earlier ridden with Haskell and blackmails Al by threatening to turn him in for murder unless he gives her all the money. Excerpt from the Global Lives Project globallives.org The subject of our Serbia shoot is 57-year-old Dušan Lazić, a beekeeper in Vojka, Serbia. He is an all around great personality—friendly, outgoing and talkative. Dušan's situation, financially, is not entirely typical of Serbia; he is on the lower end of the scale, earning on average $150 a month (about $5 per day). He trained and worked as an engineer but left or lost his jobs over the years, so five years ago he turned to beekeeping to make money. In the evenings, he sings and plays percussion with his friends in a rock band, VIS Vremeplov (Time machine), which covers old pop-rock hits from Serbia and the former Yugoslavia. As a 57-year-old, he has experienced much of the events that have shaped Serbia in the past half-century, from the rise and fall of Communism to the Yugoslav wars in the 1990's and now Serbia's trials and tribulations with independence.

www.greenteam.org.uk The Green Team is a natural resource conservation group based in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland consisting entirely of volunteers who give up their time, volunteering for the conservation and sustainability of our wild places in and around the Lothians which includes the areas around Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian. The groups main body of volunteering is by young people, aged 14-25 who come along on various day and weekend projects going green green to save the environment through volunteer work who learn about the natural heritage, environmental issues as well as the importance of protecting our environment and recycling. Since 1995, a total of over 1700 young people have worked with the Green Team within the United Kingdom improving their local area with one of the conservation organizations inviting conservation for kids where young people to carry out a community service for their area. There are also offers of conservation jobs and conservation careers with the Green Team.
