Zildjian Gen 16 NAMM 2011
The NAMM had only been open for a matter of hours before people started telling me that I absolutely, positively, unquestionably had to see a demo of Zildjian's Gen 16 system. So I made it my first stop this morning, where I ran into my old friend Derek Zimmerman (formerly with Kaman and Guitar Center) who is now at the center of the company's digital initiative. And to cut a long story short, Gen 16 surpassed the advance hype. Put simply — I've never seen anything like it; an actual alloy cymbal line that can trigger pristine samples of every imagineable cymbal and gong type, and it can still be played acoustically. Check it out for yourself. It's astonishing.

Here is a transcript of the video: Hi this is Peter Erskine speaking to you from the Zildjian cymbal factory here in Norwell, Massachusetts...with some brand new, very exciting, very inspiring cymbals. Zildjian will be premiering this number of cymbal lines at the 2012 NAMM show. I'm getting a sneak peak and now so are you. The Custom Dark Complex Ride, 22 inches... Now at this moment I'm not sure if complex is in reference to the multi-layered textures and the hard to define qualities and quantities as in complex...or maybe this cymbal has a complex, I don't know. It's very hip, it's fun to play. I mean my first take on it is that it's not quite as trashy as the Chinese, what they call the China cymbals, or the trash cymbals. It's closer to being a legitimate cymbal than those and yet it has that kind of trashy, dangerous...OK, complex quality. If this were perfume this is definitely musk...and if this were breakfast this would be corned beef hash. The 22" Renaissance...beautiful cymbal. The Custom Hybrid Trash Smash...Its got a very unusual bell...that doubles as an ash tray...but with the hammering here the cymbal, also with the lathing, is actually both visually and sonically broken up into zones. So you get different tones playing on different parts of the cymbal. This is something I've not experienced... All of them great instruments. All of them offering the universe of sounds that Zildjian is <b>...</b>

Zildjian Lesson - Matt Greiner of August Burns Red
Matt Greiner shows you how to play the beginning part of Divisions on their CD Leveler. This video is from the 2011 Vans Warped Tour. Here is a transcript of the video: I'd like to do a little lesson while I'm out here set up before we play at the Vans Warped Tour 2011. This is just the beginning of a song that we're playing on this tour. It's a song called Divisions. It's a new song and it's on our CD Leveler. So just a little run through of the beginning of this song because it's kind of a confusing sequence of parts. The beginning of this song's in a time signature called 15/16. Most songs you hear are in 4/4 or 6/4 or 6/8. Very confusing but it sounds like this... And obviously I don't count that while I play it, I just...play it, but that's what the part is in. So broken down a little bit slower... Hope that makes sense. It's kind of a confusing technical part, but it fits the guitar part pretty well and I'm pretty excited about it.

We wanted to come out to a huge opening song. About 45 seconds into the song is a part where there is this big gang vocal part. It kind of builds, builds, builds opens up and there is huge gang vocals. Our lighting guy Josh lights up the whole crowd and you can see everyone singing along and I love looking at this part and seeing kids faces as they are screaming and their fists are pumping in the air. It is like one of my favorite parts of the song in set. It's a minute into the hour and fifteen minute set list.

Matt Greiner talks about his set-up during the 2011 Warped Tour. Here is a transcript of the video: What's up, guys? This is Matt Greiner from August Burns Red. I'm at the Vans Warped Tour 2011 Mansfield, Massachusetts date. It's very hot. It's hot every year from what I hear. It's my first time on Warped, but I'm slowly getting used to the heat and doing my best to play drums...OK in the heat. I wanted to give you a run down of the cymbals I'm using on this tour. I'm using all Zildjian cymbals. The 18" Oriental Trash China...It's my favorite cymbal out of everything I play. I hit it a lot...20" K Custom Ride...19" K Custom Hybrid Crash...14" Zildjian Oriental Trash China...17" K Custom Hybrid Crash. Same as this one [19" K Custom Hybrid Crash] just two inches smaller...9" Oriental Splash...and then a 14" K Custom Dark Hi Hats. I'm also using two Zildjian bells that I created at the warehouse to sort of mimic the Zil-Bel, but its sort of my own tweak on how a bell should sound. That's my Zildjian setup for Vans Warped Tour. Everything's going well. Cracking cymbals now and then, but it's probably because I'm hitting as hard as I can and having a good time, man.

Here is a transcript of the video: So we are on the No Guts No Glory Tour right now and so far my set-up cymbal wise right now is 14" K Zildjian Mastersound Hats, as an off hand crash I have a 22" K Dark Ride, right in front of me I have a 12" Oriental China "Trash", as my main crash I a 21" K Crash Ride, as my ride I a 22" K Custom Ride and as a china I a 19" Z3 Ultra Hammered China. I try to mainly use the K series cymbals. I just think they have a really warm tone but a lot of attack in them. Which I think is really helpful if you are playing Metal things like that. I feel that attack is really necessary but the warm tones are not too bright to where with chunky guitar rifts, lower tunings. It's not sticking out to where the is "psssh" and the guitars are low "chun, chun, chun" . I try to keep cymbals with warm darker tone. One of my favorite cymbals right now is the Z3 Ultrahammered China. I like it a lot because it doesn't have just all attack it, the sustain of it is so long and is just so in your face. It's like you hit it and it's just like "woah"! I got hit in the face with that. So I am really into that but other than that my favorite series is definitely the K. The techniques whether it be spinning my sticks or just holding the stick correctly, I'd say back in marching band, I learned to do some stick spins. Other than that I think it's just touring <b>...</b>

We meet with Tracy Broussard and he takes us through his journey with Blake Shelton from playing bars to selling out venues. Here is a transcript of the video: I started when I was 10 so that means I have been playing drums for 10 years, uh, no. Where going on 30 years now and I will never forget the starting to play drums, my brother played drums and I watched him play and see what he was doing. I was in fourth grade I went up to him and said Todd look I can play drums and he said what about your feet? What do you mean my feet? I have to do that too? A weird accident happened at school, I was in fifth grade and a lot of complications. I broke my left arm, had to have a plate put in there. Vascular damage. Long story short I was week away from having my left arm amputated. So luckily everything worked out great and then around sixth grade I was able to hold my left hand stick and that is when I got my first kit. And my brother had Zildjian cymbals so I stole all of his cymbals and used them and got scared to death I tried polishing one and I didn't know it turned black first. April and May since The Voice is going on we will be home quite a bit. Summer time we will hit all the festivals and fairs. Then we will do the same tour again but with different opening acts. This tour for me is the reason I read Modern Drummer and that is what I dreamed of doing is to be there and the people are here to see the guy you are playing for and it's just like a dream come true.
