Zoetropes are magic. They take the effect of strobing that you get on the subway and put that in a little turning cylinder. It's a special form of animation that generally focuses on movements that repeat themselves like walking or a bird flying. I found this zoetrope at the Technischen Museum here in Vienna.

A new addition to the Animation Pavilion inside Disney's California Adventure, the Toy Story (II) Zoetrope illustrates how animation works, but on a grand scale. This features a series of spinning discs, each with a different 3-D animation (parachuting army men, Jessie spinning a rope, Buzz walking on a ball, Woody riding Bullseye, Wheezy and and LGM jumping on a see-saw, and an LGM waving. Be aware that the animation effect occurs because the spinning of the wheels is timed with a strobe light.

DIGITAL ZOETROPE is an installation which Troika created for onedotzero when commissioned to design a custom installation and visual identity around the theme of the festival 'Citystates'. Opting to make an installation and identity that integrate into each other, Troika created a modern DIGITAL ZOETROPE as the cornerstone of the identity, which celebrates both the heritage of motion arts as well as its digital present. The zoetrope itself is an updated model of the original zoetrope designed by William Horner in 1834. Whilst traditional zoetropes commonly display small loops of figurative animations, Troika's zoetrope works from an abstract pattern that magically starts to form words when it is lit with the right frequency. Building on this concept, Troika created a state of the art and unique prototype, designing and programming all components from scratch. By controlling the frequencies of rapidly blinking LED lights at the center of the zoetrope, it is possible to display different words or alternating patterns depending on the speed of the flashing lights.

Zoetrope - a performance by Rui Horta & Micro Audio Waves - Live at Moscow (10th December 2008). This work is the gathering of an electronic band and Rui Horta, a choreographer who works with video and who directs this work. Zoetrope is a multimedia show that mixes images, music, alternative realities, text, movement, graphic design, illumination and dance. The identities of each element co-exist in perfect harmony.
